Would you be happy with another meaningless Septmeber?

Post#1 » by ERaz » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:44 pm

Would you be happy with another .500 season or a few games above and no meaningful games in September? I am not one of those fans that said that the Jays should have signed Prince or spent a lot of money necessarily, but at the same time I would like to see this franchise finally competing for something. I don't think that fans should still praise AA if the team finishes at .500 again or just a few games over. I don't think that is good enough anymore. I would like to see a step forward this year instead of more of the same treading water.

What say you?

.500 in the AL East should be viewed as a successful season. Its a competitive team and I look forward to watching this season, and there are plenty of reasons to believe we are going to finish above .500. If not this year, in the near future.

I'd be more concerned if our farm system stunk, we had Alex Rios and Vernon Wells amongst other aging stars, and had no young players with bright futures. There is plenty of reason to believe we are supporting the next generation of Blue Jays, one which can hopefully get us at least a pennant one of the years.

Fortunately we have a lot to look forward too, we ditched the past and now are focused on the future. The team in the present isn't that bad either, they are top 10 in the MLB this year likely. (Last year we were 14th with a lot of Jays under performing, as well as Corey Paterson, Jason Nix and Jo-Jo Reyes having starting gigs)

It's sad that a 'successful season' for our team isn't the Championship, or even making the playoffs - nope, we'll be satisfied coming close to making the playoffs.

When you play the premier players in the league on a nightly basis and compile a winning record, it isn't a successful season?

We are in an impossible division but there are many reasons to believe we are going to be better set for the future. Boston and NY have to pay luxury tax now which will cripple them in FA and even when it comes to resigning players, and we left our flexibility open so we can make moves in the future.

If you don't like the direction of the team, leave the board. It's not that hard. This board is for Blue Jays FANS.

So being unhappy with a 4th place finish means I'm not a fan? No, no amigo.

Being a fan means I want to see our team WIN. It means I want to see our team play meaningful games for as much of the season as we can. It means, gosh darn it, that I'd love to see the Jays hoist the World Series trophy up again. THAT will be a successful season.

Do I think we can do it? You betcha. We've got great youth and hopefully management will eventually be willing to spend to keep them (and get more FAs). Are we there yet? Not a chance.

And will we get there if 'Fans' keep telling management that a 4th place finish is good enough? Not on your life.

I never understood why many Jays fans are happy with such mediocre results ! My goodness! It's been like that for years. Anything less than playoffs = fail imo

AA's goal is to finish 4th place every year and have some of the worst attendance in the league?

I missed that quote. They aren't content with 4th, they just aren't stupid. The goal is to win a pennant but you don't just sign Fielder and your there. Rogers will spend money, AA is telling them to wait.

They spent money in the past locking up Vernon Wells and Rios on huge deals, they can do the same in the future.

They tried to sign more FA then AA has, AA just shoots them down. It was AA who admitted it in an article too.

Rogers have said they will support higher payroll, it just didn't make sense this past offseason (other than maybe Darvish).

You have too little faith in Rogers. It's AA whose playing cheap, not Rogers, and if you disagree with the way the club is being run, it's on AA's shoulders not Rogers. I know they are an easy company to hate (they send me a 400 dollar bill once a month too) but it isn't their fault. Every somewhat intelligent blogger recognizes that too. Andrew Stoeten of Drunk Jays Fans and Tom Dakers of Blue Bird Banter both realize that AA and Rogers have done a great job to date. It's generally the unintelligent or impatient fans which disagree.

Don't think this is true! AA has a budget ever year in which he must obey! Beeston has said fans must show up for the payroll to reach 120M, remember? Not much money was/is available at this point..
Blame should go towards ROGERS not AA.

Btw, most of these bloggers who never say anything negative about ownership do so because they'd like to work for them at some point.

This. I'm excited about watching this team and they'll be competitive in every series they play, but it's too much to expect three of the Rays, Yanks, Sox, Angels and Rangers to underperform.

God this board is unreadable at times. The jays are by far the best team in toronto and were just ranked 6th in the MLB for the future and you guys are still bitching and complaining before spring training even starts. What do you want exactly? someone to guarantee that they'll win the championship this season?

I think there's a difference between what one expects and what one would consider a success though.

I personally can't wait for the season to start. Sure the off season was disappointing, but I guy named Brett Lawrie is enough for me right now to be excited about this season and beyond.

Exactly the attitude I have and the attitude I think most fans have.

Lawrie, Thames/Snider, Romero, Colby I'm all interested in seeing how they do.

Anyone that says yes to the OP question isn't a Jays fan.

That's ridiculous. If the Jays aren't playing meaningful games in September but there's been great progress by the young guys on the team, and prospects (D'Arnaud, Hutchison, Gose, etc) are getting called up and performing well in the big leagues it will be a fun year.
We also get to watch the best hitter in baseball for another season, and as others have mentioned we get a full season of Lawrie. This is going to be a really fun year for Jays fans, regardless of whether we make the playoffs or not.

As long as we're third, and our prospects continue to develop then I don't see why not. Atleast we tried to make push and ended up with an ok record rather than finish last for lack of talent.
Hopefully one of these years we can have a solid 1-5 pitching rotation through trade or development of our players, not just Romero and Morrow.

DonVitoMan wrote:just curious but is there an extra wild card spot this year i am not sure?

Has not been confirmed by Selig or MLB yet, but he seems to imply that he wants the 1 game wild card playoff to start this year.
