Finley signs two year extension with Packers for $15 million per Adam Scefter on ywitter...perhaps opens the door to tag Flynn.

Yeah, I was going to make a thread about this but was stuck on my cell phone when the news broke which is a pain in the ass to type on.

Supposed to be just under 15 million total.

I see this as a compromise between Finley and the team, it is a good amount of money, but not overpaying and he gets another shot at a contract in 2 years if he can fix his drops and stay healthy.

I'm actually shocked - I'm surprised he would take a 2-yr deal, but I guess it's good for both in the end. We get another 2 years to see if he can improve and he'll get another shot at a monster deal, perhaps with the Packers.

Does this mean we're franchising Flynn or Wells?

I'm okay with this. It's a good chunk, but even with the drops and struggles he's still ultimately one of the top receiving TEs in the game. If he ever realizes his potential and 'gets it,' then you're looking at one of the most dynamic threats from the position. I agree with chuckles that this seems like a compromise of sorts. And, of course, the franchise tag is free to use on Flynn if we so choose.

Sounds like the compromised on the exact middle between the TE and WR franchise amounts.

No way in hell does Wells get franchised. TT won't pay him big Center money. No way he sees big LT money.

Could it be that he took this deal because the constant talk from him about being a Packer for life was actually true? We are offering a big deal but for only 2 years. He likely could have gotten a longer deal elsewhere. My guess is that he is sincere in wanting to be here and that he's confident he can earn another contract.

I would have preferred that we lock him up for 4, but it's a reasonable compromise.

We've still got to worry about re-signing Greg after next season, and then we'll have James and Jermichael as FA's in 2014. That will give us time to figure out our long-term receiving situation.

My gut says he could have gotten more years, and more money overall, on the open market. But he took this for more or equal money per season right now in hopes that after 2 years he'll get a major contract from us. So yeah, I agree with you.

Calculated risk by both. In two years Finley could get hurt or just not rise to elite level. Then it's a good deal for the Pack. Or he could bust out and be elite. And then we pay big because in two years the new TV deal kicks in and the cap goes up a lot.

I like the deal. Good risk/reward.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

As for franchising, as said earlier no way on Wells. If we wanted to pay him that kind of money we would have offered it already and he would take it.

And I think it's too big of a gamble on Flynn.

But do you also agree that he really did want to stay here? I don't think he wanted to leave AR, MM, and the Packers in general.

I think this is very fair. I expect him to have a huge year next year another year removed from injury. He just didn't look the same compared to how he looked in 2009-10 when he had top 5 hands of any player in the league.

Look at this beast. How often did we see this confident monster this last season?

I think any player would be a fool to leave this offense.

Oh, absolutely. I think his desire to be here and prove he deserves a bigger contract from us won out over going elsewhere for more duration and/or guaranteed money.
