Would Dwight resign with ATL if the Hawks had Bird Rights?

Post#1 » by fullcourt » Thu Feb 23, 2012 11:19 am

"The home team, which holds the player’s Bird Rights, can offer 7.5% annual salary raises, compared to 4.5% annual raises for all other teams. The home team can also offer a fifth contract year while all other teams are limited to four. "

Would Dwight resign with ATL if the Hawks had his Bird Rights?

if Dwight was traded to the Hawks and decided to leave after half a year, he could potentially lose $50 million in salary?

Dwight is going to get his Adidas contract no matter where he goes. so that just comes to question his other smaller contracts, like luxury watches he might get in Brooklyn or Dallas. although Atlanta is just as big of a market as Dallas and Boston.

I think it depends on a couple of things. First, who does Atlanta give up. If Dwight feels that the team is solid enough then I think it would go a long way in helping him decide to stay. It would also help him feel comfortable in recruiting other players to come here for a title run. Secondly, Atlanta's market might be bigger but we are not as much of a basketball town as some of the other places. While he could still get those other endorsements, I think he could still get more and better ones in another place.

First it's a difference of 30 million, not 50, and If Bird rights were all that held sway in his decision then why would Orlando trade him?

^ Ottis and Dwight's relationship is already damaged, as well as Nelson

Dwight knows the cap of the Magic and knows that the Magic won't be able to add any players and the Magic are stuck with Turk, JRich, and Nelson.

And he would not "lose" 30M, because I seriously doubt that he would not play anymore after year 4, except for a big injury that can always happen.
He gets less guaranteed money, but what he could really loose is less than 10M on more 110M.

the difference between the first year of a contract and the last year of a contract is significant.

and when Dwight gets to the contract after the up coming one, he will be 32yr - 33yr, depending if it is a 4 year or 5 year deal.

you never know if Dwight is going to have a career like KG or like Mourning when he is 33yr.

I know, but he can really gamble on that if the difference with his other contracts are big.
We don't know the difference he would get from Adidas for example if he stay in ORL, or plays in NJN or ATL.

And I still don't see why why he would be motivated to play here with owners not wanting to pay any Tax (yes they said they would pay it for the right players...), and more important, a team that pay a player 21M/yr but never want to bring a big coach here.

Let's face it, if 5M of Joe's contract were headed each year to a better coach and maybe another veteran player, we would not be in this situation.
