Taking a look back at the KG trade
As everyone knows, we traded KG for 5 guys who are no longer on this roster. But lets look at what we got for those players.
Al Jefferson - 2012 UTAH 1st, 2013 MEM 1st, Kosta Koufus (traded to DEN with Brewer for Anthony Randolph, 2015 DEN 2nd)
Theo Ratliff - Waived. No compensation.
Ryan Gomes - Martell Webster
Gerald Green - Kirk Snyder (was not retained in FA), Paulao Prestes
Sebastian Telfair - Traded with two others for Quentin Richardson, who was traded for Mark Blount, who was waived.
BOS 1st - Drafted Wayne Ellington
MIN 1st returned - Due to the Stepien rule, this would've been the 2013 MIN 2nd that BOS would've gotten in the Ricky Davis/Wally Szczerbiak trade.
So if my research is right, what we have right now in return for KG is Anthony Randolph, Martell Webster, Wayne Ellington, rights to Paulao Prestes, 2012 UTAH 1st, 2013 MEM 1st, 2013 MIN 2nd, 2015 DEN 2nd,

Re: Taking a look back at the KG trade
The Minnesota pick returned would have turned into a 2013 2nd round pick if I remember correctly. Because of the Stepien rule, it couldn't be traded until 2 years after we conveyed the pick traded to the Clippers. But there's also a rule limiting how far out you can trade 1st round picks, so that pick would have become a 2nd rounder in 2013.

Thanks. Thats what I vaguely remembered, but wasn't 100% for sure.

We also got a lot of financial relief in those trades. I don't know how to break down what was accomplished with that aspect but it was a major factor in both the KG and Big Al trades.

The biggest thing trading KG accomplished was allowing to us suck enough to get the 3rd pick which we traded for Kevin Love.

Along with Love & cap relief, Mike Miller came along, and we used Miller & Foye to get Rubio.

I think the only way to really look at these trades is to look at the rosters before the KG trade and now. Because, really, all the roster moves are so intertwined.

Yeah, this point complicates things. Until Denver traded Carmello, trading a superstar was always a no-win situation.

Re: Taking a look back at the KG trade
Lots of good legwork there klomper.
we got a 2011 mem 1st and 2012 protected utah first + koufos for Jefferson. (the 2013 mem 1st is for flynn).
that 2011 mem pick was #20 last year, and we traded down multiple times.
Assuming Flynn + our 2012 2nd = the 2013 memphis 1st,
we traded 20 for 43 (malcolm lee) (from CHI), 2013 NJ 2nd (from NJ), 2014 min 2nd (from MIA), cash to buy out Rambis.
We got a 2015 denver 2nd for Koufos, but we traded the lesser of that and our 2015 2nd for Tanguy Ngombo. Plus we got randolph indirectly by utilizing the cap space created when we traded Jefferson.
So to recap the haul for Jefferson:
Randolph, Lee, Ngombo, 2012 protected Utah 1st, 2013 NJ 2nd, 2014 MN 2nd. Cash to buy out Rambis.
I don't count webster for Gomes since Gomes was essentially salary filler and waived by Portland before he ever played there. Portland wanted the pick. Kahn himself called dumping gomes "icing".
Ellington, Prestes, and our 2013 2nd back (which we traded to cleveland to dump Sessions/Hollins, who then ironically traded it back to Boston). I'm calling that pick a null.
So to recap the remaining assets from the KG trade:
Current players:
Anthony Randolph, Wayne Ellington, Malcolm Lee
Rights held players:
Paulao Prestes, Tanguy Ngombo
1st round picks:
2012 Utah 1st, protected 14-12-(9 protected pickswap) or 2nd round pick.
2nd round picks:
2013 NJ, 2014 MN
Cash to get rid of the cancer that was Rambis.
Lots of little assets, but not a starter in the bunch.

That is very true. I believe Al was making $13 million when we traded him last year, and Garnett had to be near or over $20 million.
Another thing about the Al trade. Its a good thing we did it when we did. I don't think that trade would've been done at the trade deadline or the following offseason because of the lockout looming. That was a great opportunity to shed a major salary.

Good call. I just was thinking MEM pick, and forgot we also got one in the HOU trade.

We could speculate as to what the trade with Chicago would have produced, but it would be very rudimentary in comparison.
This example shows how flawed the "what if" scenarios really are.

We basically got Al Jefferson + cap space for him.

Yeah I hate what if scenarios. The worst is when it was something from years ago, like the KG trade, and people assume we would have had the same exact picks all those years.
I like the way the KG trade turned out because it has led us to where we are now.
