Looks like Rutherford decided against any firesale for the Hurricanes. First they resign Gleason, and now Ruutu. Still stink this season, but glad they are keeping these guys.

Rutuu's deal is pretty fair. Can't argue against keeping him at that price.

Great to see Bertuzzi signed back at around $2 million and change a season, he's a good role player for this system and has been quite good this year.

Going to be a big game tonight vs The Canucks hopefully we can win this as they have been on a great roll.

Really? I HATE the move. Never been a big Tuzzi fan and we finally have the chance to get younger and bring up some of the kids (Tatar, Nyquist), who are close to ready for the show. Instead he gets a NTC and two guaranteed years because it's an over 35 deal. He hasn't been bad or anything, but he's on pace for under 40 points playing on a line with effing Datsyuk and Franzen.

I know Kenny loves vets and rewards his guys, but man....I gotta be honest I'm definitely disappointed. If we bring back Homer I'll scream.

Disagree. He is 29 and making 4.75M, while Neal is 24 and signed for $5M; over the life of the deal they will be separated by about 20 goals and 30 points a season. No chance Ruutu gets 4.75 in FA in my opinion.

Sound the alarm...the Red Wings lost a home game...

...and still earned a point.

Neal's deal is a steal though.

I've always liked Rutuu, he's a guy that can give you around 50 points, he's a great forechecker, good special teams guy and he's good in his own end. His extension is on par with guys like Malone, Cole, Lenio and other guys that play a similar style of hockey. 4 years 16-20 million is what I was expecting him to get in free agency.

Honestly who are you going to get for that money who can give you a gritty style he can? It's like under $2 million a year for 2 years we are not talking 10 year Jeff Carter money or Rick Di Pietro money it's a dirt cheap deal for us smart Kenny Holland signing for me.

You should know by now Detroit doesn't rush up our players Howard was beasting in Grand Rapids for years and we didn't call him up full-time till he was what 26? Detroit has a history of leaving guys down there till we need them.

I can't believe how good The Sedin twins are man they have insane chemistry it's like they have ESP or something both of them won the game for The Canucks yesterday Howard was great in the loss but I just think "The Twins" wanted it more for Vancouver

How ridiculously competitive is the West. If the playoffs started today Detroit would play San Jose in the first round. Of course the Sharks have more games remaining than anyone else, but signs are pointing to a Detroit-Chicago or Detroit-Nashville first round match up. I hope San Jose leaps Phoenix and Detroit ends up playing Phoenix for the third year in a row.

Uhh what? Nashville has 79 points and is in 5th place. They would have to fall behind Chicago (6 points back with an extra game played), San Jose (8 points back with two less games played) and possibly Dallas (11 points back with the same number of games played) to play Detroit. Unless St. Louis passes Detroit in the standings which possible I guess but 13 of their last 20 games are on the road and they're 12-13-3 on the road.

Yes I mentioned that because I am not counting out Detroit dropping to 4th and being leap frogged by St. Louis, especially with Datsyuk out for a couple of weeks.

Mike Milbury on the Flyers' search for goaltending and how it looks to have an albatross contract like Bryz under contract.

"They're in a really weird spot with a really weird guy."

Says the guy who signed Yashin to a contract that the Isles are STILL paying for.

Nowhere near his worst move. Take your pick;

1) Acquiring Yashin for Zdeno Chara, Bill Muckalt, and the 2nd overall pick (Jason Spezza)

or

2) Trading Roberto Luongo and Olli Jokinen for Oleg Kvasha and Mark Parrish (to make room in order to draft Dipietro, passing up on Gaborik and Heatley).

Had he'd not made either trade, he would've had Chara, Spezza, Luongo, Gaborik and Jokinen to build around (and I'm not even going to include trading Bryan Berard to the Leafs for Felix Potvin, or acquiring Berard to begin with in exchange for Wade Redden).

Yup Mike Milburry takes the bonehead GM cake. I mean how did he move Bobby Lou and Olli for that or Chara, Spezza for Yashin that is terrible.

Great to see Valtteri Filppula still putting up career numbers for us. That guy has been a god send for us this year well along with Datsyuk and Franzen of course. Going to be interesting to see how The West shapes up 1-8 man, your going to have some damn tough match-up's would hate to play Vancouver, Detroit, St. Louis or Nashville if I am a team that makes it

St. Louis and Nashville have the 4th and 5th most points in the NHL yet are slated to meet each other in the 1st round of the playoffs. Who else sees a major problem with this?

Helluva win for the Hawks to walk into Detroit and lock things down like they did in the 3rd.

Not to express sour grapes, but wonder if the game would have been any different had Howard been able to stay in the game past the first.

Regardless, five 1-goal games, I am so stoked for the season finale between these two on April 7th (thank you xmas gift!)

A playoff series between these two would be...something
