Amar’e Stoudemire is averaging 17.5 points per game this season, down from his 23.5 average during his first season with the Knicks.

“No worries,’’ said Stoudemire. “I’ve spent a year where I’ve pretty much had to sacrifice a lot of my game. Whatever it takes to win. That’s the ultimate goal. If it’s sacrificing the All-Star Game for the betterment of the team, it’s how it goes sometimes.’’

This is where the guy pisses me off so much, and where I think he just doesn't get it. He's "sacrificing" his numbers?!?! He's "sacrificing" the All-Star game?!?! Is this guy serious?

You may have had your touches diminished, but you're shooting terribly and haven't shown even a modicum of the ability to take it to the rack that allowed you to have those numbers, and be in the all-star game, last year.

Instead of admitting this, he's going to try and hustle everyone into thinking that his numbers have gone down because he's this benevolent, magnanimous, team player whose numbers are down because he's sacrificing them. It not that he hasn't been good, it's that everyone else has been different. Give me a break. It's like he thinks we haven't watched him play.

 I JUST read that a couple minutes ago & was gonna make a thread showing my disgust but yea I burst out laughing when I read that lol.

Amar'e is a "special" type of person & if we keep him we're screwed man...

Notice how we go from "I feel better than I did last year" to "I had to sacrifice my game"

I still have faith in STAT, I think he just needs to lose weight and become more assertive during games. He's playing very soft right now, but I think we will see vintage STAT sooner than later

Melo is not playing any better. STAT like most athletes are prideful guys. They wont admit defeat. What he says he doesn't believe.

Stat doest need explosiveness to still be an effective player. His 54team game MVP campaign wasn't because he dunk all over the place. He had an array of moves and killer jumpshot. With no summer of ball his skills are not sharp.

He can still ball ..... he just needs a good summer. As for this year he just needs that jumpshot. We not gonna win a chip this year anyway....so I have patience that STAT Melo and Lin will be fine. Dantoni ......IRK.

I think that quote from Sun's sources that stated Amare's knee operation degenerating in 7 years is a very telling bit of information. TBH ..... I hope it's his back that's bothering him because if it is the knees they will only get worse.

I love the GS trade but I really doubt GS does that. I mean Lee will probably be more productive overall for the next few years and I believe Beidrins' contract expires far sooner than Stat's.

I guess he's shooting worse for the benefit of the team.

Stat will be alright dude is still a Top Ten Big men. More PnR with him on the wing, switching him on the opposing Center more, catches closer to the basket and he will become the Stat of last year. Might not be a 25/9 big on this team anymore, but a 17/9.5 with weak side defense I'll take.

If his knees were shot he'd have no lift at all and it would be a consistent thing, not a sporadic one. Some nights it looks like he's got it, other nights it looks like he doesn't. Seems more like a back thing, backs can feel better or worse and it's not a consistent thing.

It's definitely the extra muscle he put on that's why his shot is off and also why he can't blow by other big men like he used to.

Of all the years I have been watching sports, I would have to say that Amare is the most delusional, self-absorbed player I have ever seen. He, for the lack of a better phrase, really believes his own hype.

Nobody is saying his knees are shot. They COULD BE in the process of wearing down causing his sluggish demeanor on the court. Yes .... he has some moments of athleticism but those moments are few and far between imo.

I also don't know if..... some nights he has it and other nights he doesn't is accurate. I think it's more like... for certain minutes during a game he has it, but for the majority of the minutes he doesn't.

Here's a video breakdown of Amare's decline. He wasn't involved with the pick and roll much last year either, but he wasn't this bad.

To have his old numbers he has to be first option in the offence. He isn't. Nor is the option in the paint. And his leadership has been taken away. He's being asked to be a stretch floor, floor spacer. He is doing that and as a result his points and field goal percentage have tumbled. asking him to get back to his numbers from last year means actively changing his role in the offence. That is something that the Knicks coaching staff hasn't done. They've asked him to be shawn Marion. Do you think he just decided to miss more jumpshots? No, he's been forced to take more and now as primarily a shooter he's shooting pretty well for now. Do you think that he wants to get blocked? That's a result of the spacing and the extra size he's carrying.

He won't be able to drop that til the off-season. For right now this is what he is and he won't cause a distraction to change that. That's how basketball works. The more talent you add and the more shots to be distributed player's touches go down. He's rebounding at a pretty steady rate. The team around him has changed completely, though. And he has had to sacrifice the most. His spot on the floor, the focus of the offence. It will take practice time to get that fixed. And we don't have practice time in this short season. Amar'e is a system player and the system isn't designed for him any more.

Agree that he's in a totally different role, but it's troubling that he's shooting so poorly from midrange. He's been a good midrange shooter for a long time now, and now he's not explosive and he can't shoot. His spot-up numbers have been worse with Lin as a starter, too (via here http://wp.me/p26GHB-35 ). Could easily be random, but he's shot poorly for a while now.

I have no doubt in my mind that Amare can transition to a David West-type role. He's a good shooter, he knows how to move without the ball, and I don't worry about his numbers at all.

But look at the other end of the floor - he'll never be able to become a passable defensive player, let alone someone who can help the team on that end.
