I agree with the general sentiment that it makes little sense to chase a pipe dream; as long as the Hornets reside in NO, they are not likely to voluntarily give up the name.
However, if say Seattle gets an arena approved and the NO franchise moves back to Washington to assume the Sonics identity (or stays in NO and simply changes the name), our franchise would do well to look long and hard at the Hornets name and branding IF it becomes available.
There’s a reason that observers in the general public, even today, often err in identifying that Charlotte franchise as the Hornets as it is and always will be inextricably linked to Charlotte.
While a lot of people who follow that cats and never followed the Hornets are opposed to a change or indifferent since the Bobcats are all they’ve ever know, most local residents with Charlotte roots would welcome the change with open arms. I still routinely see folks wearing Charlotte Hornets paraphernalia around the city and to Bobcats games. I myself still retain my ’92 dry rotted Alonzo Mourning replica jersey.
It’s safe to say that most of us on this board are primarily concerned with the basketball operations and on-the-court-product aspect of our NBA franchise. However, there are droves of fair-weather fans who have never been to a Bobcats game who have fond memories of the Hornets brand and would again start going to games for the mere nostalgia factor. These were the people whose numbers made the old Coliseum a sellout phenomenon.
And for the Charlotte natives who fondly remember the Hornets and also follow the present team for it to succeed (regardless of the name), the nostalgia factor will enhance their experience even more.
The $3 million to $5 million investment would be a no-brainer merchandising boon that pays for itself and then some. While they’re never going to revisit the original Hornets 5+ year record sellout streak, attendance would be boosted by a name change as well.
And if a Hornets return would come to pass a year or two from now and coincides with a return to the Playoffs, the exposure and media attn would be a PR coup.
