Assuming Pau doesn't exercise the TK on his contract (which I think he wouldn't were he to join a Spanish teammate and with the team needing that cap space) Minnesota would have a total $58.1M commited on 9 players for next season with Pau on board:

Ricky (3.7) - Luke (4) - Wayne (2.1) - Lee (0.7) - Wes (4.3) - Love (14.5) - Pek (4.6) - Gasol (19) - Darko (5.2)

The league will probably decide to keep 13-men rosters for next season, so you only need 4 more players. One of them would be whoever's picked with Utah's first, and another one could be added with the MLE. Then you can fill two more roster spots by acquiring second rounders and giving them a chance or just a couple veterans for the minimum.

Nice post :)

The 13 man roster is for dressed players in games, as opposed to the old 12 man rule, you still need to have 15 players on the team. If you carry 13, you pay a penalty equal to two minimum salaries into a pool which goes to the players, as per the CBA. So there is no reason not to have 15 players, you don't save any cash.

Ricky/Luke/?
?/Wayne/Lee
?/Wes/?
Love/Gasol/?
Gasol/Pek/Darko

If that's the team we are screwed on the wing. That's all I'm getting at :)
I think Williams/Beas/Barea is a vast overpay as well.

Your at 58.1, assuming Pau waives his TK, I don't know why he would give up a couple million, but fine. We need to add in 600k for Websters guarantee, and 848k for Miller's.
$59.6 million, so we have the MLE to work with, $5 million, and that's it for a free agent. Then we have the hope some decent wings are available in the 20's, and then we add a a few minimum players and we're at the tax. I don't think that team is going past the second round. We've gotten even weaker at wing, while getting a few more rebounds and points from the bigs, maybe. I don't think Pau would make up the difference with what we lose in points and rebounds from Williams, Beas and Barea.

It starts to get really messy the following season, Pek will be up for an extension, if he continues his current 16/10 production he'll be due something like $10-12 million, with Kevin and Pau we would be paying at least $45 million at two positions. Add in Rubio/Ridnour's $8 million, and we have ~$17 million for 10 other players. two $5 million guys, and 8 minimum salaries, if Pek is only $10 million.

I just think it would be far wiser to spend the cash that Pau would be getting on the wing. :)
