I also live in Orlando and have since '89. But I am from Jacksonville and before FL ever had a NBA team, I was a Lakers fan. I dont bandwagon jump. BUT...I ride with the Magic if they are not playing the Lakers. I was a HUGE Shaq fan. But when he played for the Heat, I wasnt a fan anymore. SO, If you aint playing for the Lakers or the Magic...then to hell with ya!

I am a Lakers fan and i suport the team and if you play for the Lakers you will get my suport. Then there are players that have been great for the team on and off the court and i hope they do well when they leve
AC Green, Byron Scott, Nick Van Exel, Eddie Jones, Norm Nixon and Robert Horry then there is Shaq that is thought did a great job for us for many years, but he did not go in good tearms and ha started to be out of shape and did not seems to care mutch about the team so i respect him for all the good things he did for the Lakers but i was hoping he would no win another ring(but he went to Miami, got in Shape and helpt Wade win a ring).
But he is still one of the my favorit player that have played with the Lakers and when he went to the Suns and Cleveland i stared to like him more (but then he screwed it all up by going to Boston  ).

So i am a team fan and i dont root for players if they are not on my team but some players you are okey with doing well. I was happy for Dirk and Kidd geting a ring and i hope Nash will have a shoot at a ring before he is gone.

Team fan. I've seen players come and go. Lebron has a great following of fans that accompany him from team to team.

Team fan.

But I started as a players fan when I got into watching NBA basketball 15 years ago. My first player was Hakeem. I also liked Shaq, Barkley, Mutombo, Mourning, Webber and some more by that time. When a friend of mine got NBA Live 2000 we created a team with pretty much all my favorite players plus, I think, Garnett and Kobe. For some reason Garnett turned into my favorite player quickly. Naturally I followed the Wolves as much as I could being a 13-16 year old living in Germany with little NBA coverage, much less about the Wolves. Anyway, when things turned for the worse for the Wolves and they had to trade him, I remained loyal to them even though I had no relation to them, besides actual Wolves being my favorite animal (funny coincidence, I think).
As the years went by, I started to get interested in the State of Minnesota and as it turns out, it would be a place for me to live if I moved to the US.

But I also root for a few players. KG obviously being one of them but the list also includes Dirk, Duncan, Oden (so sad he's barely played at all and it's not looking all that great in the future) and Nash.

just look at the number of posts a person has on their team board, compared to their number of posts on the MVP threads... shots fired

Quick question: If you dont live in the city of your favorite NBA team, then what is going to be the selling point of rooting for that team other than the players?

Pistons all day every day. I like players from other teams but Pistons are who I'm loyal to forever.

Team fan

and for the love of god can some of you people stop bashing player fans. Yes some of them are obnoxious, there are also some that are more knowledgeable about basketball than you are.

Whenever the Blazers are playing I always support them regardless how much they suck (doesnt mean I will watch every game). But if Lamarcus and Batum are both not playing in a game then I will most likely much rather do something else

At basketball i am a player fan, i like some players and pretty much follow their teams cause of them.

I guess if i lived at a city that had an NBA team i'd be rooting for them, but not the case

I live in PR but am a fan of Dallas (and it wasnt cause of JJB) thanks to their 2006 playoff run, they may have lost those finals but I fell in love with that team during that run. Hopefully one day before Dirk is done I'll be able to go to a game and see them live.

But in 3 years when the vast majority of the Mavs are different players, will they still be your team? Or will you move on to another team with players you like?

Agreed on the bolded part. A player fan doesn't necessarily mean one is a biased, obnoxious fanboy that doesn't know anything about basketball other than his favourite player.

For me, I'm not sure which I am, probably both, somewhat. I became a Bulls fan when they drafted Derrick Rose, even though I did like the team before, despite having seen very little of NBA. Since then, I've watched a ton of Bulls games, even though most games are at like 3 AM for me in Estonia and I have to watch them over horrible online streams that lag, have poor quality and end in the mornings. So you could say that I'm a Bulls fan and I'm a Derrick Rose fan, now. If Rose was to leave the Bulls for whatever reason, which I hope he never will, I'm sure I would stay a Bulls fan, but I'd probably still remain a Rose fan and he'd still be my favourite player.

Maybe one is a native of the city they root for, before moving to another city later on, or have lived there for some time.

That didnt really answer my question. If you live and always have lived in a city that doesnt have an NBA team, then what is the selling point of rooting for a team other than the players?
