Breaking down our 2012 cap situation

Post#1 » by rsavaj » Tue Mar 6, 2012 12:28 am

Excellent post by Jim at Bright Side that thoroughly breaks down our cap space:

http://www.brightsideofthesun.com/2012/ ... /cap-space

Basics:

$31,582,000 (starting point) + $2,356,320 (rookie contract) = $33,938,340 (total commitments)

$60,000,000 (projected cap) - $33,938,340 = $26,061,660 (Suns cap number)

$26,061,660 + $1,017,500 (cutting Telfair) = $27,079,160 (adjusted cap number)

$27,079,160 + $4,000,000 - $6,500,000 (amnesty Chilly or Hak) = $31,079,160 - $33,579,160

How should we spend our cap space this year guys?

I believe...

1. Suns will use the cap space to extend Nash a couple of years at 7 Million a year.
2. Suns will use a portion to absorb a BAD contract but get another lottery pick.
3. Reserve the remaining for 2013.

I could very easily see this or something very similar going down.

We'll disguise us taking on a bad deal as a kind of reload with a resigned Nash while staying away from a less than spectacular free agency.

Offer near max for Batum and/or Gordon, we'll probably strike out and than say we are trying to preserve cap space for the 2013 offseason,

That's for:

Gortat
Frye
Morris
Warrick
Childress
Dudley
Lotto
Telfair

Nash $10m x2 years = $43,938,340
Howard max (25% of cap?) $15m per, escalating = $58,938,340 (cap limit?)

Resign Brooks using bird rights $4m per, escalating = $62,938,340

Gortat and Warrick for Smith +$1,101,040 = $64,039,380

Redd to vet min, sign a 12th man DLeague scrub (Siler? Collins?) with MLE up our sleeve if we need it midseason. = $67m with MLE available up to tax threshold ($72m?)

Nash, Brooks, Telfair
Lotto, Redd
Dudley, Childress
Smith, Morris
Howard, Frye, Siler

I don't watch many Blazer games but can you explain what's so good about Batum? The last Blazer games I watched was when we made the WCF run. From what I saw in that game, he was an athletic SF with good defense and a decent 3PT shot. I couldn't see anthing then that warrants a near max deal.
