I still believe in Cole. Kid has the right attitude and he's in the right organization to cultivate it. Just needs to keep working, improve on the mental aspect of the game. In the offseason he'll have time to work on his NBA range and beef up a little.
Dex...eh. Just doesn't seem to be very skilled at all around the hoop.
I think most people just claim someone has "the right attitude" if they like them.
If anything I believe Cole has the wrong attitude for this team. He has a shoot first mentality which is the opposite of what we would want from a point guard, especially one who can't shoot.
I think you are misunderstanding what I meant by attitude. By attitude I mean work ethic, desire to get better, tenacity, love of the game, having a good head on your shoulders, etc. Just generally being a positive, strong-willed kind of guy.
I don't mean his basketball tendencies. That's something entirely different. And yes, I believe that he does need to improve the basketball aspect of "attitude." Needs to improve his shot selection and expand his game a lot, among other things.
Really, the distinction between the two "attitudes" is that one in the former paragraph is something you are born with, something you come into the league with, something that usually cannot be changed (think Beasley, Cousins). The latter is something that can improve in time.
That's kind of my point. You're attaching all of those good qualities to Cole based on what exactly?
For all we know he could be lazy, not care about getting better, gives up easily, hates basketball, doesn't have a good head on his shoulders, is always negative and is weak-willed.
I have only slightly less evidence that he is those things than you do for your list.
I could also say he's selfish (8 shots on crappy efficiency in only 20 mins a game) and wants too much glory.
See how easy it is to attach traits to someone with little evidence?
Again I think people just say that players they like have "good attitudes"
You like Cole therefore you will project all of these positive traits onto him and give him the benefit of the doubt on the negative things.
For example I am pretty sure Demarcus Cousins is a little bit farther down your list of favorite players from Cole
Someone who likes Cousins would say he is tenacious (you don't average 4.6 orb in less than 30 mins without getting after it), wants to get better (he's improved from last year), is a gym rat (he's in much better shape), wants to win (he chose Kentucky), doesn't mind sharing the spotlight (again went to Kentucky who had other stars), doesn't have that big of an ego (joined a team with the #1 prospect, when he would have been the best player on almost any other team)
But you don't like him as much so you just see the negative aspects.
That's my point, all of this pseudo-psychology and character analysis based on a couple of short interviews is bunk and driven mainly by how much we like the player.
Your emotions fuel the narratives that you create. You see what you want to see. You believe what you want to believe. You ascribe meaning when it is not there. You create significance when it is not present.
