The Raptors board is pretty much a cesspool.

two months ago biz played defense like a guy who had never been coached. basically just running around trying to block everything. so yes, he had bad fundamentals.

He didn't have bad fundamentals, maybe he was a bit overagressive but the last games he played last season in Spain he had already started to come along as a defensively dominant player, that's never been in question, he was projected as an elite defender with limited offensive game. Only those who didn't bother checking can be surprised by what he has done this season so far.
If you want to try to measure the elements of basketball that are supposedly unmeasurable, spend a game just watching Marc Gasol.

let me clarify, biz was already and semi-elite defender when he arrived in charlotte, but 90% of that was due to his amazing length, wingspan and athleticism and endless energy. fundamentally, he still had a lot of work. his improvement on the defensive end in the past 2 months, is tremendous and that comes from a big improvement in his fundamentals, learning how to use his body, holding position, boxing out, staying down on fakes, staying out of foul trouble, reading the game, showing on pick and roll etc... his first few games he was simply running around trying to do everything and block every shot all over the floor. my comments werent meant as a knock on biyombo. trust me, i am a massive biz fan and i have seen ever single minute of his NBA career so far.

I didn't get to see the Utah game. But i wouldn't think it was a bad one let alone horrible. He had 9 boards and 2 assists which is nice to see. Sure he had a lot of TO and PF but that is to be expected as is bad shooting. Fats being disappointed just shows how much peoples expectations grew for Biz.

You didn't see the game or you would be agreeing that he was pitiful. Jefferson outclassed him in ever facet of the game, but that is to be expected. Will be fun to continue to watch him grow the rest of the season.

KembaWalker wrote:theres a whole massive thread on the GB about how Valanciunas is the next foreign superstar and it seems like they all think he's guaranteed ROY and perennial all star. I guess its easy to say stuff like that when he's over playin scrubs in Lithuanian league or wherever. I'm just glad Biz paid his buyout to come over here, I'd be too depressed to even discuss him if he was stuck in ACB all this year :)

Well its not just lithuanian league but also in Eurobasket that Valanciunas placed good numbers against such scrubs like Marc and Pau Gasols, Ibaka, Kaman, Dirk Nowitzki, Krstic and others. Val is really playing great. If it was only Lithuanian league then you would be right but he was/is playing great in all tournaments he took part in.

And his footwork as well as the moves in the post is improving drastically this year too. So while Val would not be a Roy I really heavily doubt that right now Raptors would consider Biz over Val. They are pretty high on him.

I am waiting to pass judgement on Valanciunas til he is playing with the big boys, til then he is 100 percent hype

I asked in the GT and will ask again here:

Would a player of Jefferson's skill set teamed up next to Biz compliment him or does he need more of a stretch big playing next to him so they don't get in each others way?

For example look at the following pairings and say if they are good or bad:

Biz and Big Al
Biz and Scola
Biz and Hibbert
Biz and Bosh
Biz and DMC
Biz and Boozer
Biz and Favors
Biz and Howard
Biz and Monroe
Biz and Lopez

to his credit, biz did show 3 things last night i had not see from him before

1) his first post up he spun baseline and came under the basket and laid the ball in on the other side. the ref blew the whistle on him for 3 seconds, but regardless it was a new move.

2) he caught a rebound and threw a half court outlet pass to augustin which i think lead to dj getting fouled on a fast break layup attempt.

3) he had the ball at the top of the key and put the ball on the floor and beat jefferson off the dribble and layed it in for his only 2pts.

Yup, I'm not too proud to admit I was wrong, thought his "rawness" would keep him glued to the bench. His timing is much more advanced than what I thought from watching his ACB games.

On the flipside, I nailed Kemba to the T.

Ideally, I think Biz would be best paired with a smart, 6'10" or taller big with a post up game and a willing passer. Icing on the cake: isn't too long in the tooth. Like a young Kaman I think would be great. Some of those guys are too blackhole-ish, too old/unathletic, or too similar to Biz.
