Remember the rumored Melo for Bynum trade...

Post#1 » by dockingsched » Mon Mar 12, 2012 4:18 pm

A few weeks before the trade deadline last year, espn came out with a report that basically said that the Nuggets/Lakers were in talks about a Melo/Bynum trade, and further reports said that Jim Buss basically rejected it.

Here is the main thread where we talked about it:

viewtopic.php?f=19&t=1090548

The poll options that apply to me are:

- did not want the trade
- glad it didn't happen
- opinion has stayed the same

lots of jim buss hate in that thread, expected more though.

This was my post in that thread. lol

And my stance on that statement, is that if Bynum can stay healthy he's the better player of the two. Until NYK gets a real coach, the Melo we're seeing today isn't what he has been nor what is he capable of.

Anyways, I think I was on the fence of that rumor.

didn't like it than and hate it now. Melo wasn't going to change anything last year and we certainly be alot worse defensively this year, I dont think there was any big that Den could've sent that would have helped us outside of Nene and that wasn't an option. Also still hate Jim Buss but not for that trade.

Look at dockingsched making a thread where he's secretly calling everybody out, devious bastard. Don't even come in the comm thread when he's around guys.

All I got from that thread was a bunch of indecisiveness really.

Jetset wrote:Unless a Nene or a servicable C from another team ends up with us, then this trade shouldn't happen. Our interior is easy pickings with no Bynum, even with Odom at the 4 and Gasol playing center. Boston would massacre a front court of Odom and Gasol, and I just think that unless a serviceable C ends up here along with Melo, then we stand a better chance of repeating with whom we have now. But if we can fill the C position, then the Knicks would lose out on yet another franchise player.

Jetset wrote:I'll admit, while I did get a little uppity with the thought of Melo coming to LA in a way I'm sort of glad it didn't happen. As I said a few pages back, our front court would've gotten bombed if it consisted of Odom and Gasol, which it likely would've because we wouldn't have anything to get a serviceable C with. Fact of the matter is the way roster is now is our best chance at winning a title. And for all of those people who think we have no chance of winning should hope that we do, because if we don't there's a good chance that the F.O. would rage and a New Orleans PG along with the serviceable C we would need in return could very well end up here. Go ahead and start the rumors Broussard.

My whole issue with that trade was a lack of depth our FO would be left with. But looking at it now, how Melo would mesh with the team is also a considerable factor. Can't have two Kobes on one team.

Look at that, I broke the story all the way back in February of 2011.

Here's my post in that thread It pretty much summarizes my opinion:

Edrees wrote:I would consider Nene for Bynum before i considered melo for bynum.

I still think nene is a better player than Melo. Didn't wanna trade for Melo or Nene, but was just explaining that Melo wasn't even the best piece to get off the Nuggets were we trading Bynum away

It's as simple as this, if we had a pg then I would have traded Pau then. Lamar drops to the PF and Melo at the 3. We have problems with athletic teams, with that roster and Bynum beasting down low, we would have been set I feel for another run.

I think I was indifferent. Mainly because I usually take trade rumors with a giant grain of salt. I have generally liked Bynum, but his injuries have been a huge frustration (understatement). At the same time, while I've always been a Melo fan, I guess I wasn't overly thrilled about getting another volume scorer. So I didn't see this as making us significantly better.

I don't remember what I thought then, but Nene is pretty damn injury prone.

Well, we had Odom last year playing really well and adding Carmelo would have made our team complete. Now, I'd probably still trade Drew for Melo but probably a starting caliber PF would be needed with him.

With Odom that deal made sense. If I remember correctly then I supported it.

C - Gasol
PF - Odom
SF - Melo
SG - Kobe

That's not bad but Bynum has become a monster this year and I'm glad we didn't trade him.

I didn't want the trade to happen, I just thought it would be interesting seeing Melo in the triangle.

i didnt like melo in the first place.

we had a pretty damn good team dynamic, kobe + big men trio

melo wouldve f*cked that good chemistry up, not to mention taking the ball outta kobe's hands to iso, which kobe would seriously not have liked.

I supported it fully. Kobe, Melo, Odom, and Pau with Rom as the sixth man and the B's. I thought it was a good deal. I would like wise have supported Pau for Melo if we still had Odom because it was a great perimeter weapon being added to two great frinline pieces, and before recently Pau and Andrew had not gelled

If the big is not significantly better than the small, you don't trade big for small.

And if the small is significantly better, you still think very hard first.
