This is true, but Old School's flow and delivery is vastly superior.

people label the obscure things they like as "underground" so they look cool, and not like they are just following some nobody
also they want to distance themselves from the masses

I took a class where we talked about **** like that for music, books, art (a lot of memes/trolls) and culture haha. My favorite class ever.

I think the point where hip hop took a turn for the worst was when it turned into that Crunk ****. When they started focusing on using mid range sounds that you can find in your generic synths that are put out from Yamaha and Roland.

But aren't you an a nobody when you're an underground artist?
And underground artist is an artist that isn't yet established in the mainstream. I don't see what else you can label them as.

Basically the South was the end of hip hop. Lil Jon's from the south, Soulja Boy is from the south.
It's true. But NY had Mims so they didn't do any better

yeah i suppose
and for the record that list of underground guys someone listed earlier probably can't be considered underground

I'd label Earl an internet sensation. These days, the internet is considered the underground. Also, mainstream artists = people you hear on radio.

That and marketing to clubs killed it.

it isn't, i mean all these people with millions of youtube views and big followings aren't underground because a ton of people know about them
they are on their way to mainstream if they aren't already

Luckily that dj music you listen to is taking over the club scene. Rap should be on the rise, if it isn't already.
