Ramon Sessions??

Post#23 » by azdaver » Fri Mar 2, 2012 5:22 am

In the immortal words of John McEnroe, "You cannot be serious".

This guy is the WORST defensive point guard in the NBA. Here's what ESPN analyst Hollinger had to say....

"Absolutely horrid defensive player. Can't move laterally at all. Has to guard 2s."

".....his inability to defend at the point of the attack is the main reason teams have been so reluctant to commit to him. Synergy rated him the worst defensive point guard in the league by a significant distance over his closest competitor, and the Cavs gave up 6.19 points per 100 possessions more with him on the court, according to basketballvalue.com."

This guy is supposed to be an upgrade over Fisher and Blake and worth a number 1 pick? Really?

The Los Angeles Lakers are stepping up their efforts to trade for Cavaliers point guard Ramon Sessions, multiple Western Conference sources have told FOX Sports Ohio.

According to one source, the Lakers’ interest in Sessions appeared to peak around All-Star weekend, but dwindled quickly when they learned the Cavs’ wouldn’t budge from receiving a first-round draft pick in return. But after exploring the market for a point guard, “the Lakers are finding a deal for Sessions may be the best fit,” a source said.

Other teams have called the Cavs about Sessions, but the Lakers are said to be the favorites. They have been hesitant to give up a first-round pick for him, however, because he can opt out of his contract at season‘s end.

The Cavs are also content keeping Sessions if they don’t get a deal they like. Teams have until Thursday afternoon to make a trade, or will be forced to wait until the season ends.

Sessions, 25, is averaging 10.6 points and 5.1 assists in just less than 25 minutes per game as Kyrie Irving’s backup.

“He’d be a big upgrade (for the Lakers) at point guard,” one source said.

Yep, that's exactly right! And I'm sure that's why the Lakers are making calls about him.

I respect Hollinger, but he is wrong here. Sessions may even be one of the worst defensive PG's in the league (although I haven't noticed a glaring problem in all of the Cavs games that I have watched). However, Hollinger is very stat oriented, and Bryant, MWP, Gasol, and Bynum really help make Fisher and Blake's defensive stats look better. Sessions is at least as good on D as both of our current PG's, and he is exponentially better on offense.

I have defended Sessions' defense on here before, but now that I read what Hollinger said I do see the lateral issue that he is referring to, but Sessions plays more of a half court press style on D, and can be beat fairly often, but our current PG's play less aggressively and we still let opposing PG's live in the paint. I refuse to believe that Sessions isn't at least as good as our current PG's on D (I still think that he is a small improvement over). I watch nearly every Lakers game, and around half of the Cavs games, I am not sure that Hollinger does that.

I went to 82games.com to see what some stats say.

Rondo's opponents at PG this year have a PER of 11.4
Blake's opponents at PG this year have a PER of 13.1
Felton's opponents at PG this year have a PER of 13.4
Sessions' opponents at PG this year have a PER of 14.6
Fisher's opponents at PG this year have a PER of 14.0
Holiday's opponents at PG this year have a PER of 15.3
Lowry's opponents at PG this year have a PER of 15.9

Lowry's PER this year is 19.5
Rondo's PER this year is 18.3
Sessions' PER this year is 16.0
Holiday's PER this year is 13.5
Felton's PER this year is 9.4
Blake's PER this year is 8.7
Fisher's PER this year is 7.8

Rondo's net PER is +6.9
Lowry's net PER is +3.6
Sessions' net PER is +1.4
Holiday's net PER is -1.8
Felton's net PER is -4.0
Blake's net PER is -4.4
Fisher's net PER is -8.5

Keep in mind that Sessions' defensive stats should get much better with the improvement in defense behind him. (as when he gets beat he will have better help). It is hard to say what will happen to his offensive PER, but I would assume that it would remain fairly close to where it is now.

I also updated this to include some of the PG's that have been discusses as possible PG's for us to get. Obviously Rondo and to a lesser extent Lowry are better statistically, but when considwering the cost of getting them (losing Gasol) that is why I think that Sessions is easily our best PG option at this point.

Also a note, Sessions is down offensively this year, but his defense is noticably better. Last year his offensive PER was 19.7, while his defensive PER was 18.8. That defensive PER is pretty bad, so maybe that is when Hollinger's comments are referring to. Even when his D was pretty bad he was still at least a positive net, which the Lakers haven't seen at PG in over a decade.

I corrected the stats in the above post. Somehow I had ended up with last year's stats for Fisher and Blake.

According to Dave McMenamin of ESPN Los Angeles, the Lakers and Cavs tried to bring the Rockets into the mix to facilitate a Sessions deal. In the proposed trade, the Lakers would have received Sessions from Cleveland and future considerations from Houston; the Rockets would have received a first-round pick from the Lakers; and the Cavs would have received Jonny Flynn from the Rockets. Those talks are dormant for now, says McMenamin.

^^

Just a terrible trade for Cleveland. No reason to give up Sessions for Flynn straight up. Cavs wants picks not player who can barley get on the court.

Teams continue to express interest in Ramon Sessions. League sources believe the Cleveland Cavaliers will trade him today.
