As for the notion of Howard playing out the final option year on his contract (worth $19.5 million) next season, that remains unlikely as well. It's worth noting, though, that Howard's agent, Dan Fegan, is not on the books for his current contract and thus won't be paid unless he signs a new one. Pressure and problematic turns all around.

That certainly explains some of Dwight's outside motivations... especially about not exercising his ETO.

Yeh I saw that in the article. Very interesting. I didn't think about that. You KNOW for a fact, there's no way in hell his agent would allow him to. So basically his agent has made $0 from him playing in the NBA (salary-wise). If he gets a 4-yr $80+ contract, the agent makes $3mil or so. Agent won't risk waiting another year for Dwight to cash in on him. I love how these agents control the players and not the other way around. Who works for who exactly??

To all of those who think we are getting picks worth anything from NJ, what are you thinking?

They are 4.5 games out of the #8 spot. If you give them Dwight then with 23 games left they could catch up and possibly sneak in to the playoffs. So that pick may not be that valuable. Any future picks are guaranteed to suck and not be in the lottery.

So how does this help???

It would be in his agent's best interest for Howard to sign with the Magic long term. That is an additional 30 million meaning the agent gets something like an additional 2 million.

Of course if Howard wants the biggest contract he will either opt in and become a FA in 2013, resigning with the Magic or he will opt out this summer and resign with the Magic.

I still get the feeling the Magic are basically looking for a young solid rookie or two (Brooks, Lopez) as well as a draft pick and a solid veteran (Iggy, GWallace, JSmith etc). RDV had said he doesn't want a "tank" rebuild project (he is too old), and this seems to be along the lines of what they were looking to get back earlier in the year.
