CCJ - Nene missed a bunch of games because of cancer.

Re: Nick Young traded to Clippers/McGee to Denver/Nene to DC
I knew I'd see division on here. There is good reason for it. the defectors have great points (age, lack of production this year, injuries earlier in his career) and those in favor also have good points.
Here is where I lie: the trade is a B- trade, but a B- that I'm satisfied with. Getting an A in survey math is nothing to be proud of in college, but getting a B- in astro-physics might be something to relish in.
We would have had to overpay to retain McGee and Young. They aren't winners and while there is a chance they both could still become productive players for winners, they both would have combined to make more money than Nene. Also, we need bbiq more than young talent, as shown with the lack of improvement this team has shown in the last 2 and a half years.

1) Nene steps up is game and becomes the player he was the last 3 years for at least three more years.
2) This doesn't hurt their tank effort and still end up with Robinson/Davis.
3) They amnesty Blatche. With Nene's huge contract they need that flexibility.
4) They buy out Lewis.

If one assumes that we weren't resigning Nick and we wouldn't match a $10M+ offer for McGee, then this is really equivalent to signing Nene on the free agent market. Given the free agents available and their likely asking price, I'd rank Nene at $13M a year to be a pretty good signing. Would you rather pay Robin Lopez $7M a year, or Spencer Hawes $9M?
I would much rather have Spencer Hawes at 9 mil a year (if he gets a clean bill o health - and he did play yesterday) than Nene - approaching 30 and obviously declining - at 13 mil a year.
hell no. Ill take my chances on Nene. If you thought you were sick with McGee, imagine what you be with Hawes. He's exactly what McGee is minus the athleticism

Pretty sure Hawes (if healthy) commands more than $9 mil.

Re: Nick Young traded to Clippers/McGee to Denver/Nene to DC
Meh, not sure if I like this move. Not that I don't care for what Nene brings, but more so because I'm not sure he brings nearly enough for $13 million a year.
Nene brings legit defense, good court awareness, average rebounding and a so-so offensive game.
CCJ, concerning his PER I'm not overly worried about his production primarily because I don't think scoring matters as much anymore at that position with the way the game has changed.
A dominant post player can work wonders for your offense, but for all his improvement, I don't ever see McGee becoming that guy. Heck, there aren't even a handful of those guys left in the league anyway.
$13 million is a steep prize to pay, but I take solid production on defense at that position over what McGee has shown us so far.
McGee has tremendous potential and if he can ever scratch the surface he'll be a handful.
That said, it was time for the Wizards to move on and for McGee to experience a new environment. I think George Karl is a great fit and if anybody can get through to him it may just be him.
As frustrating as McGee was to watch on defense, I still like the kid and I'll be watching a lot of late games from now on, but if we look back at this trade a few years from now, count me in the camp of naysayers.
I think his deficiencies on defense are beyond fixing.

It was a good trade. It was time to break up the Blatche, Young, McGee knuckle head gang. Just wish we could get rid of Blatche. Nene has a high IQ and plays the game the right way. He can be an all-star for us next year.

Even if he maintains a PER of around 17 and continues his strong defense, he's worth around 13mil per season. Probably a bit less but I'd rather pay him 13mil than pay McGee 10-12mil (if that was the alternative).
miller, I have nothing but respect for you. I believe most people feel this way.
I think that is what is wrong.
The smart move would have been to wait and see what the actual offers for McGee were. Now, they're stuck overpaying AGAIN. I bet you almost any amount of money that Hilario isn't much better than Seraphin, Booker, or Turiaf at this point in his career.
I would pay McGee $9M because he's as effective as DeAndre Jordan and he's 24, not almost 30.
This is a bad day.

This. The trade indicates that the FO wasn't prepared to invest in Present-Tense McGee, in the hopes of eventually retaining Future-McGee.
Nene + Booker + Doris Day = a much more physical front court rotation than McGee + Blatche + Booker (or + Vesley, for that matter). Those guys are gonna split some wigs down low.
Always remember, my friend: the world will change again. And you may have to come back through everywhere you've been.

Re: Nick Young traded to Clippers/McGee to Denver/Nene to DC
What is EG trying to build here? This move just seems really desperate with idea of keeping his job #1 priority. Why do this trade? JaVale isn’t great or anything, but he gave solid production, and was still improving. Nene is 29-turning-30 and has reached his ceiling, and while being healthy the last few years (excluding this year), I bet he has a bunch of wear-&-tear due to past injuries. And while he’s been a good player the last 3 years, he’s having a down year this year playing w/ injuries. And this move hamstrings our cap flexiblity for the next 4 years, and I don’t think Nene is worth his contract.
If we were going to abandon this rebuilding plan, I would’ve traded for a player like Dwight Howard (even though is wasn’t possible), or someone who’s worth all their contract. We traded young for old, and we’re far from ready to compete.

LOL, poor George. I hope Javale doesn't ruin his health. George is going to have to relax his expectations with McGee, or it's going to get ugly. If he thought he had it rough trying to develop Tim Thomas back in the day, he ain't seen nuttin honey. Imagine Javale playing with Anderson... that'd be a sight for... actually it'd probably cause blindness.

Below-average rebounding. He's been extremely efficient around the basket.
I don't mind trading McGee and Young. But I didn't want to get back a guy who's getting a buttload of money for less than a buttload of production.

Even with Nene playing well for us. Wizards still not good enough to beat most teams anyway. Plus we will struggle adjusting to losing are payers in the deal.

Realize they got rid of Nene because of his contract. He is a 29 year old injury prone Center with 5 years left...McGee was a RFA this season.
This is a terrible trade for us. Why did we do it? Oh yeah because of a desperate irrational mentality to get rid of the scape goat of this team. It will be like a magical elixer.
We were in great financial shape for the upcoming future with Rashard expiring. Now we have yet another big man who is past his prime and 30+. Solid piece to add around Wall.

Absolutely fantastic move. I've posted numerious Nene trades over the past couple seasons and I think he's going to be great for this team. The fact that Ernie could get a bonafide starting NBA big man in return for our class clowns is completely amazing. My excitement for the Ted era in DC has officially been resored!

Tough call, but the way I look at it, what were our options exactly?
If the Wizards really wanted for McGee to stay with the team, they would have reached an agreement before the deadline. Neither side was even close according to media reports, so why take the risk?
DeAndre Jordan proved that the market for bigs is incredibly overinflated. At a minimum that's what it was going to take to keep him here, and I think we can all agree that that was simply too big of a risk to take for somebody as raw and flawed as McGee.
Sure, there might have been the chance that he would have taken the tender, but after evaluating McGee for years, the Wizards should have a pretty good feel for how much improvement to expect from the kid over an offseason.
It was time to move on simple as that, and considering that we addressed a position of need I feel pretty good about this deal.

What were the options? Be still. Sometimes the best move is to not make one. I think this is one the Wiz will regret down the road. By the end of this contract, they're likely to be looking for way to dump it on someone.
