How did you become a Wolves fan?

Post#1 » by _AIJ_ » Fri Mar 16, 2012 10:49 am

Let's take the stress out from ourselves.
I became a wolves fan back when i was playing NBA Live 1999. Back then, i admired teams that has cool logos and jerseys. I managed to pick the Wolves out of the bunch because they have an awesome jersey. And KG was a beast back then. And it stuck until now. I'll be a wolves fan forever. And im not even from Minnesota or from the US. Im the biggest Wolves fan from the Philippines! 8-)

In KG era, I loved the man he could play several positions, he could play both offence and deffence, he had many nice moves and was attractive to watch.

I also like cool jerseys and wolfs (we also have them in some parts of the country) so I like that. Also having people from former Yugoslavia (Serbs) was just a plus... even more when they have impact like Pek have now.

I started following the wolves when Luc Longley and Shane Heal played. I have stuck with them ever since. Love to see Patty Mills come play for us to.
Young fool. Only now, at the end, do you understand. Your feeble skills are no match for the power of the Dark Side.

Yeah, KG was simply a beast back then right? He will be the best Wolf in Wolves history.

Lived in MN most of my life. Seemed like the right thing to do.

But I started as a players fan when I got into watching NBA basketball 15 years ago. My first player was Hakeem. I also liked Shaq, Barkley, Mutombo, Mourning, Webber and some more by that time. When a friend of mine got NBA Live 2000 we created a team with pretty much all my favorite players plus, I think, Garnett and Kobe. For some reason Garnett turned into my favorite player quickly. Naturally I followed the Wolves as much as I could being a 13-16 year old living in Germany with little NBA coverage, much less about the Wolves. Anyway, when things turned for the worse for the Wolves and they had to trade him, I remained loyal to them even though I had no relation to them, besides actual Wolves being my favorite animal (funny coincidence, I think).
As the years went by, I started to get interested in the State of Minnesota and as it turns out, it would be a place for me to live if I moved to the US.

But I also root for a few players. KG obviously being one of them but the list also includes Dirk, Duncan, Oden (so sad he's barely played at all and it's not looking all that great in the future) and Nash.

Disagree. The rate Love is playing will put him ahead of KG.

Awesome topic, and great stories from non-Minnesota fans.

I've lived in the Twin Cities my whole life so it was pretty natural. I was 7 years old when the franchise began so I wasn't up on news and things. I remember being at a neighbor's house playing and his dad had a Wolves game on during the inaugural season. Pooh hit a half-court shot to end a half, and I just sort of lost interest in everything else and watched the rest of the game.

I HAD to wear #23 in basketball rec leagues but Jordan was just a convenient afterthought. Tyrone Corbin was the man.

He would need to win an MVP and get us to the finals at least to move ahead of KG and even then it would be arguable.

Not very original, but I became a Wolves fan around the time KG won mvp. Loved his passion and intensity.

Born in IA with most of relatives in Chicago so grew up Bears and Cubs fan. Got into Bulls around Junior High due to Jordan. Moved to MN in 1991 when I was in high school (yeah, I'm old) and started watching some Wolves games as I just started to get into NBA. Saw the Wolves beat Lakers for first time and pretty much just cast my lot with the Timberwolves (still like Bulls, but they're my 2nd team).

Still have basketball cards given out at my first game with Longley (rookie) and a cast of other forgettables. So I've seen a lot of the lowlights Will say for those of you that are younger there wasn't anything better than when the Kevin's were doing the TV broadcast.

Well, I'm from Brasil, we don't have a lot of basketball lovers over here, but when I was like 7 years old, I had a SNES and I rented a game called "NBA Jam", I fell in love with the T'Wolves jersey! That's not the most glamourous way to become a fan but, after that I had to buy the game and then like 1996-1997 the internet came and I could finally see how my team was doing!

And me and my girlfriend soon to be wife, since we started to see each other, we're planning on going to Minneapolis! Someday soon I'll meet some of the posters! :D

My dad took me to a game after we moved to Minnesota in 97. I was 10 and saw a Steph to KG alley-oop and I thought it was pretty sweet. Then I saw a KG to Steph alley-oop and fell in love. It's history from there.

Basically off of random selection. Years ago, I was playing 2001 NBA Inside Drive and decided to pick a favorite team. I moved toward the team selector and proceeded to randomly pick one team. Luck had it that I landed on the Timberwolves. Also, I didn't start actually start following the T'Wolves closely until the 2009-2010 season, but I'll follow them for many years to come.

I'm from Spain.

I became a fan in 1997. At my house iin Seville we have two rooms for american students who came to study spanish. That year was the first we received those students. The firsts who came were from Minnesota. I was 12 years old, I liked a lot the NBA and I pplayed basket with them.
97 was the second year of kevin Garnet there. One of the students gave me a Garnett t-Shirt. I began to followw the wolves then but my favorite team was Lakers until 2009. I followed the Twolves during the best years although I didn't keep in touch with the two guys from Minnesota. I wanted Lakers win in 2004 western finals. If that would happen today i'll go with Wolves

In 2008 I regained my relationship with them. Months later, In April 2009, I went to the USA (Chicago and Minnesota) and i could watch a Twolves game. It was the last game of the season against Sacramento. Maybe one of the worst games I could watch but I was happy to have the chance to see a game siiting at the second row behind the basket and salute some players and Kevin McHale.

Since then I have a special feeling with twolves and they are over Lakers at my preferences. I hope we win today against lakers. I remember talking with my friends before the game about the possibilities of signing Rubio at the '09 Draft. Even I bought a basketball magazine SLAM with Rubio and Jennings at the front page. Casuality?? I was very happy when Rubio was selected by Twolves. I was so afraid too when Rubio played so bad his last year in Spain. I feared my friends would stoop talking to me if Rubio fails there

Images of the game:

And that is a funny photo. Look at the guy watching the blond hair girl. That was a random photo I made to see if the camera was well configured for interiors. It was made at NBA restaurant after the game

Hello fellow Philippine fan, I pretty much had the same reason on why I became a Wolves fan, except that for me it was the NBA Jam back then that I noticed the Wolves and took a liking to them and I've been a Wolves fan since then! :D

My story is similar to karch's only I'm older and I'm not from Iowa. I grew up in Houston, started watching basketball around 1980 (Bird, Magic, Kareem, etc.) and was a huge Olajuwan/Rockets fan. I moved to Minnesota in 1991 and decided I should at least watch some of the home team games. I was split between the Wolves and the Rockets for the first couple years but gradually became more and more of a Wolves fan and I haven't looked back.

I was 9 when the Wolves came into existence, and other than being a NY Giants fan, I didn't really grasp the concept of being a fan of a team until 91 with the North Stars and Twins making their runs. I liked the concept of a professional basketball team being here, and vaguely paid attention. The Shaq draft is when I started paying attention to the Wolves and became a huge fan when the Wolves ran a Hardwood Classic promotion where they pushed the historic franchises, Lakers, Celtics, and Knicks in a 3 game pack and got to see Magic when he made his return in 1996.
