Blazers Waived Greg Oden

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Thu Mar 15, 2012 11:28 pm

According to an ESPN report, the Greg Oden Era in Portland has come to an end. The top overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft has reportedly been waived. Wow: “Source with knowledge of Blazers’ thinking says team has informed Greg Oden’s camp that Oden is being waived for needed roster room after deals.” http://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/20 ... greg-oden/

Oden waived to make room for Thabeet and his expiring? :)

Hey I know! ATL should pursue this guy in 2 years when he's scheduled to finally be healthy.

Not saying we should sign Oden but surely we're going to try to get lucky with a big (or 2) sometime.

The apparent refusal to try to acquire (develop/trade for/sign) a true Center is galling. Not counting FAs or 2nd round picks like John Edwards and Solomon Jones, it's been since 1999 that we tried to develop a first round pick into a Center (Cal Bowdler). Even in the case of FAs or 2nd rounders, when have we gotten a guy with the body to have a chance?

Next draft. Fab Melo or Festus Ezeli. If they don't go for size in this draft I may have to spring for torches and pitchforks.

if Oden could be healthy by playoffs, then why not sign him, he could help and he could bring alittle excitement to the team.

maybe Oden can benefit from being in the locker room with vets like Stackhouse, TMac, and Collins, just to give the guy some hope

I'm sure every competent GM will have already investigated Oden's situation and has a decent idea of his health. If no one signs him, we can assume he's toast.

However, if anyone signs him and it's not us, I will be upset. Forget about a healthy Oden - with the leadfoots we've been putting out on the court, if Oden can just defend and rebound I'd love to have him.

Even if we're only taking a shot at a player for next year, say he has to heal all this year, I'd think he would be worth the look. For goodness sakes, we've been carrying Jason Collins all year.

Wait. Y'all don't think our management believes TWIN can get in shape and be our anchor, do you? Is he our major project for the post?

Signing the soon to be waived Turiaf is a better investment.

Just so you know Oden will miss the next season as well. The soonest he'll be back assuming nothing goes wrong would the 2013-2014 season.

For this year. But I'm not sure Turiaf is even a slight improvement over Zaza. He doesn't rebound better than Zaza. He doesn't score better. He does blocks shots, so maybe he's better defensively.

Keeping Oden on our roster would be a bid to go deeper in the playoffs ... 2-3 years in the future.

Sign him to a 4-yr. minimum contract with incentives for games played. Either that or actually draft/trade for/sign someone with a chance to play the pivot. This doing nothing (so far as not getting a Center) is pathetic.

Turiaf's biggest problem is staying on the court. Think Reggie Evans and his insane pace that he plays at, he fouls too much. But he is a active rebounder, can finish around the basket(and with as many passes that Zaza gets RIGHT at the rim and can't finish, that will be a huge plus) and is a solid defender, a great help defender, but again, he challenges EVERYTHING and will rack up foul trouble. Oden is never going to produce anything. Its time to accept that.

People are talking about how done Amare looks after on microfracture surgury, Oden has had THREE.

We do need to look at the position though. Its kinda ridiculous that we have all these guards and 2 centers and 2 guys about to collect a pension.

Turiaf can finish better than Zaza, and he's good on pick-and-roll if your team plays it and your PG is good at this too ;)
Maybe better help defender than defending his own man.
One of his plus, playing with all this heart, is also his minus regarding foul trouble.

He would be, at least for this season, a big help, and we could be a team he would choose, because if he signs for the minimum for the reminder of the season, I he could be in search of the best offer of playing time/chance to play in playoffs, mainly because he wants to be in shape for this summer (Olympics with the French team).
Since Al is out (and I prefer him to stay away from court until next year than risk another injury in May), I don't see why we couldn't use him.
BOS and MIA could make offer too.

He was injured two months ago, and was supposed to be out fro 6 weeks.

I'd try to sign and stash him, anyway. We've gone without a real Center prospect for so long, what's the matter with paying the league minimum for 1 and a half seasons? If he ever gets healthy, we're geniuses and if not, we wasted the minimum.

Now, if our management knows he'll never be healthy, that's different. But I don't think there exists such secret knowledge.
