Ugh. I guess it pretty much makes sure that the Blazers will get this pick.

Re: Outsider question- Wallace trade
Found this gem on NetsDaily explaining the protection and ive got to be honest, i agree with it. I could see us ending up on the fringe of the playoffs at worst and hopefully if Houston make the playoffs we would have a pick just a couple of selections later.
So unless the pick was top 8 protected, it doesnt make that big a difference. Were not going to be sending Portland a first from 4-7 range. I wouldnt be happy but lets be real, a pick around 10-14 isnt that bad for Wallace. I think the real concern was if we remained awful we would be giving a very high pick, top 5 type stuff.
That isnt going to happen. Like I said i can see us finishing 9th in the East. I think the Knicks will get better and we will have a good finish to the season.
To anyone who wanted harsher protections on the pick:
We’re currently the sixth worst team in the league. Realistically, if we play well, we could leap-frog Detroit and maybe Cleveland. I don’t see us catching the other teams, just imo. For argument’s sake, let’s say we finish the season the eighth worst team.
With that finish, our lotto pick could either land 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10, or 11.
We have protections on 1, 2, 3, so remove them from the list because the pick will be ours if we land there.
That leaves 8, 9, 10, and 11.
So… if we made the pick top 4 protected or top 5 protected or top 6 protected or top 7 protected… it would be the same as making the pick top 3 protected.
In other words, unless you feel the Nets are going to absolutely fall apart the rest of the season and drop down the standings from where they currently are at 6, it doesn’t make sense to argue the pick should have been top 5 protected rather than top 3 protected.
In my example, it makes sense to argue the pick should have been top 8 protected or top 9 protected or top 10 protected, etc. but not top 7, 6, 5, or 4.
In a perfect world, the pick would be lottery protected.

Top 10 would have been fine by EVERYONE. And the problem is King trade our only real asset for Gerald Wallace
. Are you telling me out of the other 29 teams in this league, the best we could get for our pick is Gerald Wallace? And only Top 3 protect it? I might be the minority on this, but I don't agree with it.

Playing devil's advocate here...
Who would you have been able to trade for with a top 3 lotto pick, Okur and Williams with 4-5hours left to make a deal?
Remember D Will told King he wanted someone in to help because he didnt want to rebuild

No one.
You wait until the off-season (draft day. If DWill badly wants to contend and not wait for a young guy to develop? You make moves then. That pick will hold more value in the off-season than 2 hours before a deadline.

Re: Outsider question- Wallace trade
So if Gerald Wallace decides to opt out of his deal then you guys traded a lotto pick for 2 months of a someone who you could've signed anyway? The Deron Williams trade was questionable but at least there was a plan in place. The two options after Dwight screwed you guys yesterday were Trade Deron Williams or stand pat, wait for the offseason and hope Deron resigns. To give up a potentially high pick for seemingly no reason at all is simply baffling. It's deals like this that make me optimistic about the chances of being a Real Gm.
Sorry Nets fans, I don't mean to rub it in, I just can't believe the incompetency. As a lifelong Knick fan I'm seeing you guys take backwards steps and make moves the Knicks used to make. I feel bad about it and offer my condolences as a fellow disappointed fan.

Re: Outsider question- Wallace trade
Okur was expiring and I can't recall Shawne's contract, but we gift wrapped our only trade able asset. Hell, look at how protected the Houston pick is, and look at what we basically gave away. Just look at this season from day 1 of the "off-season" to the trade deadline, horrible signings and trades topped with a sh*t load of D-League call up. Another year we wasted tanking for a star, something I've voice my opinion on since day 1. I also voice my opinion about doubting Howard being all in on us, and got ripped a new one, and I was just questioning it. Its whatever know, waiting to see if King can redeem himself, but Nets Nation went HAM on Twitter on Nets organization, and I'm sure they've read it all.

You don't trade it you keep it and build up more assets and start again next year. We can go for somebody like Dwight again since he only opted in for one year and not signed an extension.
The season is already lost, keep tanking, get a high pick and start again in the off season.

Re: Outsider question- Wallace trade
It doesn't really matter who you would have drafted with the pick it's the fact that a full / near-full lottery protected pick should have been enough to get the deal done that pisses me off...
