Of course LAL can trade their pick next year. I beleive the stepien rule is that you cannot trade consecutive future picks. LA has not had a 1st pick since Toney Douoglas, who was sold to NY. LAL did not have a 1st last year and they trade their 1st this year as well.

why would you assume thats the reason he wasn't traded rather than because he's old, mediocre, overpaid, and nobody wants to help Dallas free up cap? just curious

There's also the fact that with Dwight opting in, there was no reason for Dallas to try and swap Marion for expirings, especially if they'd had to sweeten it.

If they cut Odom they already have enough capspace for one max free agent (Deron), so with Dwight off the market it's pointless to incentivize a Marion dump, which they might have had to.

Ah, yes, you're correct, I don't know what I was thinking

Still, how much salary will they be able to dump for pick 29-30?

In general, LA usually gets $3-6mm in salary savings when it moves its 1st. The dumps happen at the trade deadline so that LA has paid most of the salary, but gets the whole amount for LT purposes. It also let's the player in question play into or out of the trade. The dumped player is usually at the end of the bench with no minutes. Examples go all the back to Mihm, Radman, Cook, Evans, Vujacic and now Walton & Kapono. Expect a 13 man roster again as well.

This is a good return for an LAL pick. Most of these picks have been in the 29-30 range and since Chicago will push Miami, it could be a 26th next season.

I was happily wrong about the Pacers; I didn't think we'd get someone like Barbosa or Kaman, but probably someone like Roger Mason or DeShawn Stevenson for that 2nd.

I also thought we'd struggle to break .500 on the season (we still might).

In other Pacer-related crow eating; I thought Collison would blossom into an All-Star when acquired from NO. Boy, was I wrong.

spearsy23 wrote:Even if that pick manages to 'fall' into the 18-22 category, assuming Miami is 28-30 that's a solid 6 to 10 spot jump. That could be the difference between a career backup, and a solid starter down the line. Not to mention, it's a better trade chip if they want to target a guy and move up to get him.

mgmt. hasn't used a 1st pick for the past several years now, not that I like that strategy but I'm sure its going to continue.

Did you say breakout, or did you say Wes Johnson would have a BUST-out season?

Waiting for some Gortat crow eaters........

Mark Deeks: Good news Suns fans - Marcin Gortat does NOT have an ETO in 2013. It is listed in error on the site, and the person who did it will be shot. about 19 minutes ago

I don't think I used that ETO to talk down Gortats value, but I have said at least a dozen times that whenever there is a discrepancy between Sham (and storytellers) and hoopshype, go with the former(s). This won't change that advice, but it will make me refrain some version of 'I can't think of a single time when hoopshype was right and Sham was wrong'. I will have some crow on this, and great news for Phx. :)

Im not saying you were, but there were PLENTY of people downplaying Gortats value as being a form of a rental because of this. Awesome news for Phoenix! :D

How many Suns fans should be eating crow in thinking they were going to to a King Ransom for a EXP Nash? :meditate:

Yes. Every once in a while in a Derrick Williams for Gortat thread (maybe elsewhere, but that seemed to be where I recall it always) hoopshype's lack of the ETO would be cited.

Nope. LAL got suckered into eating the rest of Eyenga's contract. Kid is awful and has little to no future in the league.

Or.......I might be responding to this post again in next year's version of this thread. I doubt it, but we'll see.

Can some Sacramento fans eat crow about Hickson?

For a long time they thought he could be traded for Batum, and that it was a good deal for both sides.

I don't think many Suns fans claimed this, in fact, I can attest to guys like myself saying we would rather keep Nash than trade him for what would be offered league wide. We knew what his value was to others because of his age and his expiring, but we also knew his value to our team as the best player for the last decade and possibly the best Sun ever. There would be no point in even considering dealing him for a bunch of middling prospects or a late pick, which is clearly what your FO felt as well, so if anyone should be eating crow, it should be the people who proposed deals where we were sending Nash out and had to include other value (like Dudley, Frye) to get some horrendous proposals.

Case in point: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1167068

Nonetheless, back on topic, I'll eat major crow for the Dwight thing much like many other posters on here, but that's mainly Dwight's fault and not ours. I did however claim numerous times that Orlando would be foolish to not make a Dwight deal because he would surely bolt, but clearly I've been proven wrong, at least for the time being.

I can still say that I believe Dwight is not staying in Orlando past his current contract, but that remains a topic for another thread.

Oh, and I'll eat crow for saying Robin Lopez could net us a late first, even if it was the 30th pick in the draft or something.. apparently he can't net us anything and he's gone for nothing this summer. :o
