Re: Jonas Valanciunas 11/12 Season Thread II
My expectations was always low, but when I think about Noah or the same Davis' ppg. their rookie year, I have that hope that VAL will be solid from day one.
Its just a hope though, but look at it. If he somehow adapts better than Pekovic, who shared the same exact weaknesses as VAL and had a terrible rookie year, then he can top those guys.
Besides secondary perimeter skills, Noah was inept offensively, he still is kinda. 6.6 ppg. on 48% as a rook, Val can top it, his offensive game is clearly better. VALs numbers were already more promising than Noah' this summer in Lithuania.
All those Biedrins meets Chandler comparisons are long time dead, VAL just exploded after the draft. If you are not exited, you are probably dead.

No, the spurs did actively try to go up to get Val.

Wow, guys, these comparisons gone too far? What's common in Pekovič and JV? And Noah and JV?

Pekovic and JV are both extremely efficient scorers around the basket.
And Noah and JV are both C's who are great rebounders, play solid D, and have nonstop motors and excellent mobility at the C position.

Interesting point. I think that's part of why most are so high on him. We want this team to get their act together and finally contend and JV shows so much promise that we want him to be "that guy".

I don't see a single similarity between Pek and Val. All centers should score around basket. All Pekovič can do is to rebound and to overpower his opponents. Val is ballerina compared to him with all his offensive arsenal, including jump shot which I think he'll develop. Val's game is not based on power, he'll be strong, but he has a heck of first move and quickness for his size. In other words, Val is very much different player and his potential is way higher than Pekovič's.
As for Noah, maybe only determination and passion for the game what you probably calling motor. Nothing else in common. Noah's hands is wood compared to Val who has perfect tough, sweetest baybe hook, and perfect mechanics overall. Noah has no offensive game compared to Val. The only advantage Noah has - better athleticism (that is ability to jump higher). Again, Val has way bigger potential.
I see Val as way superior player than these two when he's matured and at his peak. Again, these comparisons not saying anything about Val. He's completely different.

I want him to be that guy, too, but it's crazy to act as if he's exempt to all the rules of rookie big man development. He's not.
I just read that Andrew Bynum has finally reached 12 place in PER leaguewide in this his seventh season in the league. He was nowhere near this efficient in the past. He had to grow stronger, learn skills, mature as a man, all of this takes time. I believe Jonas' international play and his dedication might accelerate his development, but the NBA with 82 regular season games and a whole lot of insane travel is like nothing he's experienced. That takes a year or two of getting used to.

Geez... VAL Pekovic is talked about so much, thats just getting boring to explain it again and again, especially when its so damn obvious why they even compared.
We talked about weaknesses and adaptation. There is no better comparison than Pekovic talking about that, if you dont see any similarities, you aint looking. TOs, fouls and moving screens, 3 sec adaptation, thats a main red flags of VALs and thats main problems Pek had a terrible rookie year.

I really hope the fanbase can wrap their minds around that. I'll hate to see this board if JV averages 5, 5, and 1 his rookie year. I'm worried about his fouling mostly - patience will be key for all of us.

Well, I was talking not only about your post specifically. There was some wishes like "please develop into Pekovič". He shouldn't develop into Pekovič because that would mean leaving Big V potential for Pekovič's potential and I wouldn't go that way. As comparing them because of similar possible adaptation to NBA, we still don't know how Val will do there. There were hight intensity games where Val came out very efficient and without any TOs. We'll see, but I'm still not sure it's a good comparison. Pek can't move like Jonas does, that's the key with moving in and out for 3 sec, Jonas improved screens a lot compared to his fist Euroleague's season and yet he still have half of year to improve that (he'll work pick and rolls a lot in NT), the only real concern is fouls. Yeah, I think he'll have problems with that in the first season or two. How did you decide that Val will do very similar to Pekovič in the rookie year?

Considering that Ed Davis did better than 5,5,1 in his rookie year, I'd consider it a disappointment if JV doesn't have a better rookie season than that.

On other hand, that's the stats of Kanter's rookie year and he has better body for NBA at the moment than Val does. I have no doubt Kanter will be way better player than Ed Davis. It depends on adaptation I guess and a lot of different aspects (coach, team, physical and psychological conditions, the luck and boost of confidence in the fist month or vice versa).

I would for sure be disappointed but at the same time it's not what he does in his first year that determines how good he'll be. A euro big coming over and playing 82 games is going to be some tough on him as a rook. More so than Ed Davis' first season was on him. Val should be getting five years to prove he's a long term piece here.

If Donut is Donatas Motiejunas, you'll be surprised.

kanter's 5/5 stats are based off his lack of minutes...he's avging more points/rebounds per 36 minutes than joakim noah.
offtopic but kenneth faried just had a monster game 18/16 in 24 minutes on perfect shooting...just ridiculous.

Not sure what you're talking about, Kawhi's been solid all year playing limited minutes.
