Grizzlies Considering Signing Gilbert Arenas

The Grizzlies are considering signing Gilbert Arenas, according to multiple sources.

Memphis wants to see Arenas in a private workout before making a decision.

While the Grizzlies initially hoped to sign Arenas to a 10-day contract, he is looking for a guaranteed deal for the remainder of the season.

Not sure why they would want Gilbert Arenas. I hope not. I guess as a back up for Mike Conley. I just think the Grizzlies have a good thing going. Not sure if Arenas will help or hurt. In the end, it would be nice for Mike Conley to stop playing 40 + minutes a game.

The plan reported is that Arenas is planB if Mayo splits this summer. A cheap backup for Conley for the mean time. Currently Mayo is on the trading block reported by the Memphis CA this morning.

With the move on Young dropping the Grizz below the luxury tax threshold, the Grizz brass (or better yet Heisley) will have to be majorly impressed with Arenas to sign him as it will mean becoming a tax payer AND foregoing a share of the tax-paying team's luxury tax IIRC (although I feel like the so-called "cliff" was softened in the new CBA, somebody correct me if I'm wrong here).

jefe - believe you are wrong. the league picks up significant portion of the vet min contract. we'd only pay a fraction of a pro-rated vet min contract for the remainder of the season which would keep us below the luxury tax. this is how teams like Boston, Miami, Dallas add vets the week before playoffs start like PJ Brown, Sam Cassell, zydrunas Ilgaslkasiaslks, and Peja. http://sports.espn.go.com/dallas/nba/ne ... id=6054560

Sure hope we sign him. It's an embarassment that the NBA teams have band together to boycott this guy.

Unfortunately Agent Zero has himself to blame. If he and J-Critt didn't pull guns on each other, then Arenas would not be in this mess.

Chip from 3SOB said that he heard they'd scheduled the workout for around 4 PM CT today.

Idk. Just hope that Arenas will focus on contributing to the squad and do anything to screw that up.

It's official folks. Agent Zero is now a Grizz.

As a Lakers fan, I'm jealous.

I think Arenas still has a lot left in the tank. And I was hoping the Lakers would pick him up.

Great signing.

All we need is 12-15 good minutes a night and a promise not to start anything with Tony in the lockerroom.

lol. I can imagine it now. Neither side unwilling to backdown if they were to scrap it out.

I hope Arenas plays well for you all. He is a good guy. Good in the community and everything. The problem was/is his knee. Being out or partially playing for those many years have definitely robbed him of some aspects of his game. That is what made him not worth the contract. Not anything else.

There are knee issues, but he´s getting the minimum for vets. I´ve allways thought Grizz are contenders this year. This is the type of low risk-high profit gambles that big teams make. It might not work, but if it does and he comes up being an important 6th man at the playoffs we could be witnessing something BIG.

Terrible move. I thought the Griz were on a run and playing well. Why bring in this guy?

Dude plays like a 40-year old pretending he's Peter Pan

Statistically he had one of the worst seasons in NBA history last year. He's a smug guy tries to be funny comes off as creepy, everyone on the team knows he's getting paid 20+ mil for a couple more years by a diff team that just wants him to go away.

Can't jump, can't shoot (although he certainly tries as much as he can), can't finish, nobody knows what he is going to do next including the refs and his teammates, acts like he got dribbled into a corner when he is in the center of the court, perplexled look on his face as if he doesn't know what's going on, deer in the headlights

20 games left hopefully the Griz can see the light, cut him after about 16 games and have a few games back to normal where they can get tuned-up for the playoffs

He is a good guy, though he has personal childhood issues he needs to deal with.

Thanks for the warning orlando dawg, but might be Arenas has shed 20 lbs, gotten himself into better shape, and willing to accept a lesser role on our team playing 10-12 mpg in a backup role. The Grizzlies are on a run and playing well but let's face it - with the way OKC is playing lately and the huge upgrades LAC / SAS / and LAK just made we had to do something to ensure we get to that WCF and take that next step towards a championship this year.
