I've got to say, this is by far my favorite time of the year in the sports world:
- The NFL offseason (FA / draft)
- The NBA trade deadline
- Spring Training / gearing up for fantasy baseball (I'm a total FBB nerd)
- March Madness

you forgot to add champions league knockout rounds!!! :)

Anyone see where Javale Mcgee has informed the Wizards that he wants 14 million PER season? I know hes a tremendously talented and athletic player, but damn.

The average IQ on that Wizards team must be something like 7.4

I still like Jordan Crawford though. He's like the new Larry Hughes.

An average. That means less this year probably. Kinda like Tyrus's contract, just more expensive.

14 mil is way too much for McGee... Gotta put the work in offensively and defensively... T2 is so underrated... Length for days, Chicago way too much for a 23 year old... didn't work out. He's still fairly young

1. Great way to get traded from a horrible team that seems to have the worst direction in the league.
2. Tyrus is underated, because he is such an underacheiver.

I have a question about the NFL...

I heard today that Drew Brees is a FA; why wouldn't a team that went after Peyton Manning -- say, the 49ers -- go after Drew Brees as well? I assumed it was just because it was assumed that Drew Brees would re-sign with the Saints, but then everyone talking about the Saints today talked about how they better lock him up, they should have already re-signed him, etc.

Saints have franchise tagged him so he isn't going anywhere. But they need to lock him up for the long haul to bring stability to that franchise.

Ah. I never understood what that whole franchise tag thing meant. It's like something where if the two sides can't agree on a deal, the team can force him to play for them another season at a set price? So, essentially the only options for him are re-negotiate a long-term contract or play one season at that set price?

Pretty much. It's basically there to keep players from moving to larger markets, at least for one season. For example, if it existed in the NBA, we could have used it on Felton or Kwame.

Players who are tagged can hold out until week 10. If they hold out after that, they can be tagged the next year as well. IIRC, Vincent Jackson did that last year and now he's with Tampa.

By franchising Brees, the Saints owe him something like the average salary of the top 5 (or 10 maybe?) QBs in the league. So players normally get a year of a huge payday instead of less over a long-term deal. There's two versions of the tag: the exclusive version (Brees is the only exclusively tagged player in the NFL), and the non-exclusive (if he signs to another team, his new team gives the old team two first rounders). Either tag is usually a last resort since players don't like playing under one-year contracts in a sport where injuries are so common, and it can cripple a team's cap. Though players don't typically like the tag, they usually sign once they see all the zeros and have an agreement to continue to work on a long-term deal.

By being exclusively tagged, Brees can't even hear offers from other teams, the franchise offer is the only option unless he and the Saints can work out a long-term deal. The nature of the tag typically causes players to get more than they deserve, but Brees has a case as a top 3 QB (top 2 if Peyton isn't as good post-surgeries), so the Saints actually save money (rumor is he wants over 20 mil per year, and the tag is like 18 for one year I believe).

What's interesting is that Drew is refusing to sign the franchise tender. Understandable, since he's been tagged before. In 2005 he played under the tag with the Chargers and suffered a torn labrum, thus making him an injured free agent with few offers. He still got a good contract with the Saints, but the tag likely cost him millions. During the lockout he tried to get rid of the tag, and even sought immunity from it for himself and the other star players that were suing the NFL.

With free agency approaching, and the Saints and Brees well apart in negotiations, they were forced to franchise him. Thus keeping him from testing the market. Honestly, a really sleazy move by the Saints (but if you're like me, you expect nothing less), but the guy has limitless leverage right now with the whole ongoing bounty scandal.

Well the Lady Cocks run came to an end, I think they still have a lot to build on though.

Catching the 2000 High School McDonalds game. It's so cool seeing how these guys looked that long ago.

Eddie Griffin looks like an absolute stud. Range for days, smooth with the ball, good athleticism. Why didn't he ever work out? They compared him to Tim Duncan.

Zach Randolph is a beefy kid. Easily 300lb but has post moves for days, even this long ago. The announcers compared him to Duke's Carlos Boozer.

DeShawn Stevenson also looks like a stud. Clearly the best guard on the floor from what I've seen. It's also really weird to see him without all the ink though.

Darius Miles looks super athletic and active. He's been matched up with Crash and has been working him the whole time.

To that, Crash has been invisible. Guess he really doesn't do well in exhibition type games? Never mind, he just threw down a nasty windmill on a fast break.

Darius Rice looks pretty intriguing as well. Three pointers, dunks, etc. busy on the floor.

I was once a pretty big Clipper fan because of Darius Miles. Him, Maggette, Richardson, the head knocking. Really appealed to me.

griffin was the enigma of that high school class. he was the #1 NBA draft prospect for most of his freshman year at seton hall (same nba draft as kwame that next summer when curry, kwame and chandler were out of high school). griffin had some problems his freshman year that caused his stock to drop. if i remember correctly he had a fight with a teammate and maybe was kicked off the team or suspended. regardless, scouts started to figure out that he was a bit of a headcase. basketball wise, i remember him being a lot like tyrus when tyrus was at LSU. undersized tweener who dominated at lower levels due to superior length, shotblocking and rebounding. didnt really have the skills to do much else at NBA level and he was crazy.

darius rice was another people were gushing over, a 6'10" 3pt shooter - like paul george ;) he was similar to another bust, jonathan bender. rice never got any better in college. he would have been a 1st round pick if he can straight out of high school.

of course out of all those guys, darius miles was the one that everyone thought was the next mega star. he was supposed to be the next kevin garnett. however, he fell into the athletic tweener trap. too small to play power forward and not enough actual nba skills to excel at small forward.

oh, and stevenson, i forgot about his hype. he was the next kobe. people were freaking over his size and skill for a shooting guard.

what an amazingly overrated high school class that turned out to be. this high school class should be the poster child for why its so hard to determine who good a player will be when they are 17-18.

When I was a kid, I remember getting the Sports Illustrated magazine with Curry and Chandler on the cover. The next twin towers or something along those lines.

That didn't work out too well.

Looks like Frank Martin will coach the Cocks, this has LULZY written all over it. Don't get me wrong he is a good recruiter and coach and I think a good hire but I can't wait to see the look on these kids faces when he goes straight military style on them!
