So Reid went in again on Grunfeld. Maybe the pressure from the WaPo will get to Ted.

From the Post article:

People who lead franchises are evaluated on their decision-making, and Grunfeld’s best decisions lately have occurred in fixing mistakes of his own making. With the Wizards on track for their fourth consecutive appearance in the NBA draft lottery, the person who put them in this position should no longer be allowed to lead their efforts to get them out of it.

Thank God some in the Washington sports media have not been conned. Ted reads the Post. One of the most scathing indictments to-date of Ernest Grunfeld.

Shocking that he still has this job. At his best, he's mediocre. Why employ him?

Jason Reid wrote:Since the start of the 2008-09 season, Washington has had four coaches. In January, Grunfeld fired Flip Saunders after a 2-15 start. Under Randy Wittman, Saunders’s former lead assistant, Washington is 8-19. At 10-34 combined, the Wizards have the second-worst record in the NBA.

Washington’s lack of significant progress since the coaching change indicates the decision to fire Saunders was short-sighted.

Um. I'd say going from a 0.117 win percentage under Saunders to a .296 win percentage under Wittman is "significant progress". That's going from a 9 win pace to a 24 win pace.

+1

Not only that, but Wittman has to get some of the credit for Wall being freed up on offense. The numbers for Wall under Flip vs Wall under Randy Wittman have to be as dramatic or more than the win pace uptick.

I don't think the firing of Flip was short-sighted--he'd clearly lost the team. What was short-sighted was not first firing the guy, EG, who created the environment where knucklehead players did not have to listen to the coach. EG created that situation--Flip was just unfortunate enough to be thrust into it.

I think our improvement has been due to 3 things:

-Wall bounced back (I don't credit Wittman for this--I blame the lockout for the rough start)

-Blatche was injured (harsh, but true, and Wittman gets no credit)

-The team has played with more consistent effort (credit to Wittman for benching guys when they aren't working hard and giving more time to guys who are)

Wittman essentially recaptured the team. It's still a bad team, but they're not running wild. I don't, however, blame Flip for losing the team, but rather EG for creating this horrible environment.

Agree, for the most part.

Reid's trying to be provocative. Or he's just dense. Firing Flip wasn't short-sighted. I agree with Will that keeping Ernie is weird.

I agree with nate that there's been progress since Wittman took over. I don't think all of that is due to Wittman -- will's analysis is good, I think. But Wittman has been part of it. However, I don't want to get carried away with "progress" since Wittman took over. The Wizards (going by scoring differential) were about a 14-win team under Flip and they're about a 24-win team under Wittman. They've gone from historically awful to just plain awful. They've gotten better, but they're still a very bad team. (That's not criticism of Wittman -- I don't think any coach could make this group even mediocre. Just reality.)

I think Wittman has done a good job but we need to remember the schedule was tougher when Flip was coach. The vast majority of their games were against playoff teams. Wittman got two gimme wins against the Cats right off the bat when the Cats were missing 3 starters.

I think the team has played better with Wittman and i like the way he has handled the team but like others have mentioned there are other things going on. Sure Wall started playing better but he did the same thing last season at the same time. Blatche being out also helped a lot.

He was just on the Mike Wise Show, Reid was. Mentioned Ernie's replacements: Alonzo Mourning or Danny Ferry. I changed it to Hot 99.5. He was making some good points but when he mentioned that, I couldn't take him seriously anymore.

Here a good article about the dumb decision making that Ernie Grunfield made. http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/wi ... ory_1.html

Is Mourning in the front office? I haven't really followed his post playing days.

No, I don't think he has any front office job. He's basing it off him having local ties because he went to Georgetown. It's unreal, he writes this article about how Ernie needs to go yet he goes on air and throws out a name of someone who's never had any real front office experience.

Zo is the Vice President, Player Programs for the Miami Heat. Here's the description of his duties:

Mourning is responsible to ensure the personal and professional development of HEAT players, while providing direct support and one-on-one mentoring. In addition, he represents the HEAT in various community and business endeavors.

That doesn't sound like GM credentials to me. I'd prefer a guy like Pritchard.

I think Ferry has worked for the Spurs for awhile, not sure of his exact duties. I agree that it is pretty weak to throw out a couple of names just because they have local ties.

Yeah, Ferry is back with the Spurs as their VP for Basketball Operations.

Thank you. He should have put more thought into that response. "Having local ties" isn't enough of a qualification for the position of GM.

And Ferry's track record is spotty at best. He tanked for Lebron, and handed millions of dollars to the likes of Larry Hughes and Mo Williams.
