In Asian cultures surname comes first.

The family name ("last name") comes first in China.

If it were the same here, it would be like "Bryant Kobe" and "James LeBron".

I only know this from manga/anime, that the surname comes first in China and Japan. Uzumaki Naruto and Uchiha Sasuke. If those names weren't spammed about a million times in the series, I would never have known. This should have been the first question on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire". Right up there with the question about Hannibal crossing the **** Alps. PEACE.

On the other hand, Jeremy Lin's first name is JEREMY... that's like asking why any other player doesn't put their first name on the back of their jersey..
