OT: Amare Stoudemire out indefinitely
http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/03/26/knicks-stoudemire-out-indefinately-with-bulging-disc-in-back/
It's being reported that, after an MRI today, Amare Stoudemire will be out indefinitely due to a bulging disk in his back. Word is he may not be back in time for the start of the playoffs. Obviously, a big blow to the Knicks.
My question to Suns fans is: Does the Suns decision not to bring Amare back (unless he signed a contract heavy with health-related stipulations, which he refused) sound better and better every day? I know many fans were angry with management when the decision was made, and while I was disappointed to see him go, I backed the team 100% in their decision. Just curious if anyone's opinion has changed or been reaffirmed?

This is a IF story.... I think that if he was here, in Phoenix, probably he could be healthier because the training staff...... Or we could have won the NBA last year playing like an MVP with us......... Or he will have a lot of injuries the next few years and he will not play more than 1 complete year with the Nicks..........or.........
I don't know.

Interesting perspective. I definitely think our training staff would have helped, but I still think it was important for the team to include the clauses in the contract that Stoudemire ultimately declined. With the two microfracture surgeries and eye surgery, it was important for the team to look out for its best interests.
Regarding his current back issue, something tells me it might be related to the knee injuries (over compensating for pain or discomfort in the knees).

Not bringing back Amare for the asking price and/or contract stipulations is fantastic. And definitely sounding better and better as we keep seeing Amare's decline.
But that doesn't validate the wasted money on Warrick, Frye, Hedo, and Childress that summer. There were so many other quality names during that time - and they didn't make effort to make key power forward additions.
Granted, they salvaged Gortat out of it, but you still have Frye, Childress, and Warrick wasting away your payroll. Hopefully after this Summer, Suns finally get a legit PF. Tired of below-average players (Warrick), inconsistent centers playing PF (Frye), and youngsters waiting to develop (Morris).

Obvioulsy the Suns' training staff had a big influence in that decision. It was tough, but it was the right thing to do.

Was his back even a known issue in Phoenix? I was under the impression his knees were the central focus.

His back didn't happen until the Boston series last year, where he hurt it trying to dunk in warmups.

If that's the case, you can't really say the Suns expected this. Dodged a bullet is more like it. Deciding to let him move on because of the knees was the right thing to do, but his back injury doesn't really validate it.

I'm glad he made his money and is set for life. I'm also glad it's not the suns paying him. My favorite player but he's just had bad luck his whole career.

That is the only non-IF part of the story

Too bad for Stat.... I harbor no more ill will to him... as he provided 2 or 3 yrs of some roll-on-the-floor yeehawing. Easier to remember than his 'I'd like to play here' tour.
His ailments should put to rest the questionable animosity for not signing him. The Man spells it out nicely.

But I don't know if any back issues came to light by our med staff before we offered the contract that we did. If any did, then it would validate it. Unfortunately, I am not privy to that info.

I thought it was a good idea from day 1.
The more relevant question IMO is: if we offered the same exact contract as the Knicks (around 3 mil more and without the health-related stipulations ) would Amare still sign with the Suns? I'm pretty sure he wanted to be #1 in the NBA's second largest market, and after the season ended, he was done with the Suns regardless of what contract they offered and contrary to what Amare may have said about the Suns being his "#1 option". Amare has been one to always want the spotlight.

Re: OT: Amare Stoudemire out indefinitely
I was not happy we turned down his extension request for something like 14-15 mill... when he said he would sign mid season... but no way on the 5 yr 100mil deal. All that status and respect baloney he equated to his payday. His ego got the best of him and the BS about going to the better team imploded into the mess that the Knicks are now.

That is if that offer really existed, and maybe if he hadn't gone on a national tour telling every city that he would bring them a champion if they signed him, while he still had two years left on his contract.

But after he asked a group of elementary kids to write the Suns about getting him an extension, and since we were on our way to the playoffs, maybe the FO thought if they gave him that extension, he would not give as much as what he would give trying to prove he should get a max deal. Plus since no one was offering anything good for him, maybe the FO thought he wouldn't get a better deal than what we offered.
I am happy we made that decision, but very unhappy with how that TPE was spent or used.

In the book Seven Seconds or Less it described that Amare wasn't taking his microfracture rehab seriously after receive that first extension and the Suns' management was very frustrated because of it. He came back the next season but longterm they were never sold.

Re: OT: Amare Stoudemire out indefinitely
I think Mike ran him into the ground last season with NY hence the back problems, I'd still rather have kept him as we still spent big bucks on players who can't seem to produce on a consistent basis. Time will tell I guess if STAT spends the next 3-4 years injured in NY.

This. When someone mentioned the Suns might get David Lee, I thought he would be perfect playing with Nash, especially because he hustles, and that one thing Amare never did well, what was it... REBOUND.
I could only imagine the Suns having Gortat and Lee working together...
