Jerry Reynolds

Post#1 » by bibby1023 » Thu Mar 29, 2012 2:56 am

I'm not sure if this has been discussed or not, since I haven't been around the boards for that long. I was just curious how others feel about him as a commentator. My friend (who is also a kings fan) and I always make fun of him for some of the stuff he comes up with. Some things he says doesn't even make sense. but I can still tolerate him and don't have a problem with him, he definitely makes the game more entertaining some nights. Just curious how fellow kings fans feel about him.

You either like him, or you really don't like him. He's funny to me though.

There's a 3rd option: you're glad he's there and not the Kings version of Tommy Heinsohn, Clyde Drexler, <insert 2/3 of the other color men in the league here>

Reynolds is like taking a senior in the draft: he's never going to be great, but he probably won't be a useless tub of goo either.

Having been a league pass subscriber for the last few years and hearing just about every local commentator team there is, we have it good. Jerry is hilarious, knowledgable, and relatively un-biased. Whenever I get the non-Kings commentators on league pass for a Kings game, I groan. A lot of these guys are boring as robots, don't know anything about basketball and regularly get basic facts about the opposing team dead wrong, and are more biased than your annoying friend who thinks the home team, home coach, and home management can do no wrong. Even if you don't think Jerry is funny (I don't know how someone couldn't though...), he knows what the hell he is talking about and gives fair and insightful assessments of the games he calls. Watching the Kings is a better experience with Jerry, and Grant for that matter, calling the games. Again, we have it good.

Jerry is goofy a lot of times but when it comes down to actual basketball information, there's no doubt he's one of the best out there.

We have it good with Jerry. He has been here from the start, is quietly hilarious, and the perfect good guy balance with Grant. Now if I could just limit his "obviously" word usage to 10 times a game then would be perfection.

[In advance, I applogize for any and all spelling errors!]

Overall I like Jerry Reynolds, but sometimes he can really get on my nerves. All of the nicknames he comes up with are annoying (husslin huskie, bayou bomber, ect). Some people deserve nicknames, but not everyone needs one! It also gets pretty annoying that he can't really ever say anything negative about the kings; he always qualifies what he is saying with something nice about the team.

That said, he is pretty knowledgable about the game. I would much rather have him than a lot of the other color men in the NBA, based on games I have seen on NBA TV.

Side note, I have run into him four times around town, book signings, and kings events in last ten(ish) years. The man is one of the most sincere people I have ever met. He really is happy that he established his level of local celebrity and that he gets to make a good living doing stuff that he really does enjoy. Talking to him in person I can tell you that his persona on TV is the exact way he acts in real life. I ran into him just in the middle of town and he was just happy to talk basketball. Jerry Reynolds really is a great guy.

Seen pretty much every commentating team in the league, and Jerry and Grant really are top notch. Love Jerrys comedic relief, after listening to them you really do get bored with other broadcasters.

See that's the thing. I don't think he's trying to be funny, some of the things he says just makes me crack up.

IF YOU DONT LIKE JERRY REYNOLDS, YOU DONT LIKE KINGS BASKETBALL!
