Lakers should buy a #1 pick this year

Post#1 » by laduane1 » Sun Apr 1, 2012 1:30 am

After seeing the lack of bench help. The Lakers being way over the cap. Trading both #1 picks. If one other team wants to see there #1 pick. I could see the Lakers doing that. If it is in the right area. Say 12 to 18. Lakers need some young talent and second round picks are not getting it done.

Buy a pick with what money? And I don't think picks get sold in that range, they're usually traded for if someone wants one.

We could have traded into the 12-15 zone if we had kept both our picks. I'd feel like the jewish kid on Christmas when draft day comes along.

Give me money and I'll buy it for them.

Kind of misleading, but I think the OP meant 1st round pick? Difficult to buy the #1 pick in the draft.

Lakers only draft pick. #60....That sucks when we had two picks in the first round.

From how the Lakers have operated the last two years, the Lakers would be one of the teams that would sell off picks.

I came into this thread thinking that the OP was suggesting we buy the #1 overall pick. 1st Rounder =/= #1. LOL.

Same here.

OT: It's highly unlikely they'll buy first rounder considering all the cuts they've been doing. With a first round pick the money is guaranteed so I expect the Lakers to stick with second rounders.

We should buy THE number one pick!

I guess the title was misleading. I meant to buy a mid first round post lottery pick. Teams like the Suns are always selling there. With so much talent. Just hate to see the Lakers not get a good young player. This will be 5 straight years without one of the team. Trades and selling them. I know they want to save money. I think it would be cheaper than spending 5 million a year for a older player like Walton or World Peace.

Historically speaking 12-18 picks are useless anyway. For every Danny Granger you'll find 10 Sebastian Telfairs.

What about Michael Cooper #21?

3rd round pick #60

Drafted out of New Mexico by the Lakers in the third round of the 1978 NBA Draft (60th overall),"Coop" became an integral part of the "Showtime" Lakers teams of the 1980s with his defensive skills. In a twelve-year career, he was named to eight NBA All Defensive Teams, including five First Teams. He won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award in 1987. He, along with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson, was a member of five Lakers championship teams in 1980, 1982, 1985, 1987 and 1988.

That's a pretty silly statement.

That's the range where guys like Jrue Holiday, Alec Burks, Shumpert, Bledsoe, Bradley, Ty Lawson, Teague.... have been drafted. If we landed a guy like them we'd be well set with atleast our back up positions for a good part of our future.

No one's expecting a franchise player there but a solid starter is always there to be had if drafted well.

They should buy a few. Rookie contracts are bargins. Luke Walton 5 mil, Artest 6.8 mil, Fish 3.8 mil, Blake 4.8 mil are not. We over pay our role players. Save us from ourselves.
Lakers are 22-3 in OT last 6 seasons:Kobe best OT closer!

I've always envied how the Spurs drafted and developed players.

Parker was the 28th pick. Ginobli was the 57th pick. DeJuan Blair was the 37th pick. Tiago Splitter was the 28th pick. George Hill was the 26th pick which they turned into Kawhi Leonard after 2 productive years.

15 years ago we drafted Fisher with the 24th pick.

The Lakers rely on luring free agents with Hollywood and the Laker mystique.

I wouldn't say it's mystique, they tend to add players when the time is perfect. Mitch has his eyes on Gerald Green at SF and Michael Beasley perhaps as a spread 4. He prefers paying guaranteed money to guys like that.
