2012 Orland Magic NBA draft thread ...

Post#1 » by Nemesis21 » Mon Apr 2, 2012 10:40 pm

Creating this thread to discuss the draft and find out who all of you would like to see the Magic draft.

A couple of links to Mock drafts you can find on the internet,

http://www.mynbadraft.com/2012-NBA-Mock-Draft

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1127 ... version-10

http://nbadraft.net/2012mock_draft

http://walterfootball.com/nbadraft2012mock.php

http://www.draftexpress.com/nba-mock-draft/2012/

I personally would like to see PG Marquis Teague and C Robert Sacre drafted by the Magic. Teague gives us the PG we have been lacking for too long and Sacre would be a fine backup C for Dwight. Orton project is most likely over and Fran is not coming over.

PG Marquis Teague 6'2" 190lbs Kentucky

NBA Comparison: Steve Francis/Rajon Rondo

Strengths: At 6’2 190 with a very strong and well-defined frame, Teague is a physically gifted guard prospect … Teague also is a great athlete, with prototypical speed, quickness, strength, explosiveness, and agility … Great 1st step … An aggressive slasher, who penetrates very well and looks to get in the paint to score or kick the ball out …Will finish in traffic and through defenders, as his strength, length and athleticism aid him … Has little difficulty getting where he wants to on the floor … Has a great command of jab steps, counter hand crossovers and hesitation moves off the bounce that keep his matchups off balance and compliment his acceleration well … Handles the ball very well with both hands, although he likes to drive left (he’s right-handed) most times … Teague is excellent in transition and likes to push the ball down the defenses throat before they can get set … Is more comfortable shooting off the dribble than spotting up … Has raw shooting skills, but does have promise due to his fluid mechanics and shows flashes of deep range too … Is able to score and make plays for others very well … Likes to make the flashy play, and can generate momentum changing plays on both ends …Will get in the passing lanes and generate steals …Is an intense competitor, who plays with a passion … Pretty vocal on the court, and has leadership qualities … His brother, Jeff, is a young PG for the Atlanta Hawks so he does have some bloodlines … Great potential as a scoring PG ...

Weaknesses: Teague right now struggles with decision-making, particularly in half-court offense … Often tries to do too much and needs to value possessions more … More of a PG than his brother but there are some concerns how natural a PG he is, and at times will look for his own shots too aggressively when he should be looking to get teammates more involved … Doesn’t show the best floor vision at all times and generally only sees the side of the floor he’s on … Although he has potential as a shooter, he’s not great right now … He needs more confidence and repetition from outside of 18 feet, as he doesn’t look confident shooter farther out than that consistently despite having the ability to make those shots at times … Teams will certainly go underneath screens against him … Teague has the tools to be a standout defender, but he does need to work on his fundamentals on that end to reach his potential … Is prone to reaching and gambling for steals, his intensity wavers on that end, and he isn’t a great pick and roll defender due to the lack of urgency he gets through screens ...

Overall: Teague has promise as a scoring PG who can set up guys too … His athletic and physical tools are top-notch … He has a developing jumper and is competitive and energetic … He should play less selfish and consistently defend, but he has talent … He is a potential lotto pick for the 2012 draft .

C Robert Sacre 6"11 250lbs Gonzaga

NBA Comparison: Michael Doleac

Strengths: Prototypical center size – a legitimate 7-footer with bulk … Very much an old-school center with a handful of back-to-the-basket post moves ... Has made himself into an outstanding FT shooter (~80% from the line) who is able to get himself to the line consistently. He might be the best FT shooter of any true post player alive … Smart defender and solid shot blocker, relying more on size and positioning than explosiveness when getting blocks … Shown improvement. He’s developed all aspects of his game substantially since arriving at Gonzaga … While not called on to do so often, he has shown an ability to hit a face-up jumper from the 12-15 foot range … Has good lateral quickness on D for a big man which shows in his ability to defend against screens …

Weaknesses: He often plays small, not using his size and strength advantages to bully opponents … Lacks length. Arms appear to be very short for his height ... Not a great leaper; doesn’t explode off the floor … Not a great rebounder for his size, only averaging around ~7 boards a game during his senior year (and that’s a career high) … Should consistently dominate the inferior big men he faces in the WCC, but often doesn’t … Doesn’t use his body to establish deep post position nearly enough … Struggles mightily when double teamed … He doesn’t dunk when he often should. This is due to a combination of keeping the ball low, hesitating, and pump faking too much … Can be inconsistent and disappear for stretches of the game if he’s not receiving touches in the post.

I'd like Teague as well, but, the guy that BleacherReport has us taking seems like a good player too.

Edit: I'd also like to trade up (using J-Rich, and if we have to, our 1st) to try and get Austin Rivers, he seems like he would be a nice player.

The bleacher report guy is an idiot, Ryan is perfect PF to play with Dwight. A play making PG is a bigger need then another PF.

I like Marquis and I like Tyshawn Taylor at the point, but one guy that we really need to consider is Tony Wroten. Wroten is a 6-5 athletic pass-first PG, drawing comparisons to Tyreke Evans. Has a real knack for setting up his teammates and has an excellent 1on1 game.

As far as a big man, Mason Plumlee looks promising to me. 6-11 ultra athletic PF/C. He reminds me alot of Marcin Gortat, would be really awesome next to Dwight or Ryan, assuming he commits to the draft. Sorry no videos, posting from my cell. Just my opinion.

Teague appears to be the best player for us in the mid-20's. Reminds me a lot of poor man's Rondo with a jump shot. But idk if it's because he plays with a lot of star power or what, he seems to not take advantage of all his talent all of the time. He doesn't impress me as much as Kendall Marshall. If the Magic were serious about drafting a point guard, they should trade up to get Marshall. He's a real pass-first point guard who can run a team well.

This. I want to trade up for Marshall or Rivers. Marshall first though.

maybe someone should email this thread to Alex Martins... since we all know that the Magic don't scout draft players at all, if any.

To get some of these players mentioned, we would need to trade up. I wonder if any team would give up a top 15 pick for JJ. And hopefully we can get rid of JRich and BBD for second rounders.

If we could get either Dion Waiters, Moe Harkless, or Royce White I would be ecstatic.

Dion Waiters is a pg with a big body (could play 2guard) just a tank when he gets going to the rim & has a pretty good jump shot already. Big time potential.

Moe Harkless reminds me of Thad Young & has all the tools to be an elite defender going forward. He can pretty much do anything u ask him to do.

Royce White is like Lamar Odom 2.0. He is a point forward who can create some major match up problems. He brought the ball up the floor the majority of the time for Iowa St. Very versatile.

most of those mock drafts has us taking PF's because.......?? do they not know that Baby is locked up and we'll probably resign Anderson......with Clark and Harper in the wings as well?
