OT: one day in PHX

Post#1 » by nevetsov » Tue Apr 3, 2012 1:31 pm

Hey guys, I'm going to have a free day in PHX, between attending the back to back between OKC the night of Wed 18th and vs LAC the night of thurs 19th. Any ideas of what to do?

I wouldnt mind doing some shopping for suns gear so if there are any good outlets (in addition to the team store at US Airways) that'd be handy.

We will have a car so transport isn't an issue - we'll be arriving from LA the evening of the first game after a couple days sightseeing and boozing it up, and leaving Friday morning for the Grand Canyon south rim to go walk the trails.

Cheers!

Well, I might be biased as an alum, but I think it's worth wandering the Arizona State campus. And I'd get me some pizookie at Oregano's, but that could also be nostalgia talking.

Pizookie's are just pure win. I visit Oregano's weekly - pizza and wings son!

Nev, usually Walmart has some good to decent Suns gear for pretty cheap. Sometimes I have grabbed some good gear at Target, Ross, and/or Marshall's. But you won't be able to get any older jerseys like KJ at any of those places.

Plus now that most to all of the Target has P-fresh, you can get groceries for your trip. They also have a travel section where you can get supplies. Although I have purchased decent Suns gear at Walmart.

I am heading to Hawaii on Thursday, and I plan to hit Target as soon as I can to get supplies for the month.

What? If I was the CEO of Target, why would I mention the other three stores, one of which would be a major competitor? Just trying give out info for a brother from down under. :D

Here in Cali, Target has a whole wall for Cali teams. But like I've said, I have purchased decent Suns stuff at Walmart. Ross/Marshalls has been good to me as well. Although I have found great Suns and Sun Devil stuff in both Tucson,AZ and Modesto, CA.

The first (and only) time I ever went to PHX, with SDU, TASTIC, NF33IH, KPCB and Rodrizzle, we were lucky enough to have David Griffin make us a reservation here before one of the games. was absolutely amaze balls. Great suggestion :)

What's a pizookie? Pizza cookie?

I don't recall seeing oreganos the last time, are they a franchise? we pretty much spent all our time at Hooters at the Arizona centre so it's little wonder haha. Pizza and wings sounds like a definite win.

Not really artsy, like the outdoors, def sporty. However, we'll be coming off 3 days of alcohol abuse on the sunset strip/ downtown LA before hitting up the wed night game, so probably looking for a bit of downtime where we can just shop up on suns gear, eat, check out sights and detox. We plan to hike halfway down the South rim the day after (to Indian Garden campgrounds) so that might be enough to satisfy the sporty side. otherwise id love to check out the camelback trails.. Maybe next time :)

Thanks for the heads up RDG. We are staying downtown (so we can drink at the games and stumble home), do you know if there are any places like those you mention in that area? If not that's ok, we'll prob just do cruise on the thursday. Just keen to get anything really, s you can't get any suns gear in Australia without importing.

And good call on the supplies, we will def look into that for the Canyon portion of the trip! Now if there was some way of guaranteeing a backcounty permit..

One more thing - when I listen to the Suns game on the radio, I hear ads for Biltmore fashion park, Scottsdalefashion square etc.. Are these just shopping Centres? anything worth checking out?

I'm pretty keen to head back to Scottsdale too and hit up the Martini ranch, is it better on a wed or Thursday night? I love that place.

If you are going up North for any reason stop at the one in the northwest. It's only 1 mile west of the I-17 which is the main interstate that runs north/south. It's a local restaurant thats been here as long as I can remember not some chain...great food at good prices this is where the locals eat.

The hot sauce is amazing (I could drink it) and make sure you get a cheese crisp for an appetizer. Aside from that pretty much everything they have is good; if you want to try something unusual get a fundito ive heard from many people that its great but myself im just a taco and enchilada type of guy. They have a normal restaurant area but if its packed you can also seat yourself in the cantina/bar area which has all the big screen tv 's and stuff in case there is something going on you want to see while eating. If you or your wife like coctails they have 2 margaritas named the red death and white death not to be taken lighty. 8-)

If you do decide to go let me know maybe I can meet up with you as im always looking for a reason to go there lol. But if you do go without me make sure you post your review here after.
