Helton has a huge deal that expires after the apocolypse. I hate it. He has an out clause to get out of his deal at the end of this year but I don't see who is going to give him 5 years and 80+ million to make it worth his while. He hit 49 HR in 2001 and now he can't get more than 33 since. I wonder why? I think it is foolish to go after him unless we also get some nice prospects with him or force him to restructure his deal to make sure that he opts out after this year. -Jitpal

He'd be another expensive, short term quick fix and his numbers are clearly declining, but i'm in the camp that would go for it if we did little besides eat salary. I hate seeing Mientkiewicz in the lineup.

If Cashman wants another bat in the lineup then he should get a right handed batter.

Highest career average among active players. Its not like we don't have the money. The guy is a professional, this isnt Bobby Abreu we're bringing in.

aaaand that's why we shouldn't. Still, it's worth looking into to see how much we'd have to take on.

Yea the rest of that contract is gruesome. Helton is still a good player and would definitly help us vs. Dougie, but its a looonngg expensive contract and after shelling out for clemens the media would be trashing us like crazy, and for good reason.
Fuentes is VERY attractive. A lefty closer who we can put ahead of Mo in the 8th would help our bullpen immensly. When you look at his numbers you have to remember that he is pitching at Coors field.
My question is that do you think its worth it to take helton (who would also upgrade the lineup) and his contract to get Fuentes?
The Rockies arent going to contend so they could be open to trade their closer to get rid of Helton's contract.

I also dont think we would have to give up alot. By taking on Helton's contract we would get both players for next to nothing. I would love to give them Farnsworthless but his 5.6 mil a year probably wont help.

it puts us in reverse, you get older , you don't really solve anything w/ Helton he bats .286 vs LHP very decent but we need a RHB not another lefty w/ a hefty contract and his own opt outs which he won't take because no way he makes more money than he is currently.

Still, I understand how much you like prospects and the idea of getting younger. But the money issue gets me. Since when did the Yankees becaome the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Washington Nationals? We could have a $300 million payroll and still Steinbrenner would make money.

Helton's career numbers.....344 vs RHP, .309 vs LHP. The guys a stud. If someone like Frank Thomas (a freak athlete) could put up numbers until he is 40, I don't see why Helton (a freek athlete couldn't do the same.

The problem with Helton is that his contract runs until 2011. He probably is the best option we have at 1B, but his contract is insanely backloaded ($19 million in both 2010 and 2011). Unless the Rockies can eat a sizeable portion of that salary, then I am not interested.

All I'm saying is we get a gold glove caliber first basemen, we all know how much that means after seeing Giambi there the past few years. He is a .3freeking36 career hitter who is the consumate professional. He has the prettiest swing I've ever seen, Giambi is off the books after next year, if Helton's range starts to falter who cares, we stick him at DH for the rest of his contract and he becomes our backup first basemen....
