Who Here Trains? And What?

Post#1 » by REDDzone » Mon Apr 16, 2012 2:56 pm

With the hopefully increased traffic to this board this week with mma action perking up a little, I thought I'd try to stir up some more discussion.

Who here trains in anything? Not necessarily trains for mma, but just to work out, or whatever. Any MMAists? jits players? boxers? wrestlers (highschool or now)? etc?

Any cool stories? What is your belt rank? Do you compete? Why do you do it?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

I'm on a 7 day schedule. Day 1 biceps, day 4 biceps. 250g of protein/day for max gains. Farting out that whey is stand-alone cardio.

I do conditioning on the subway to the club with some pull-ups and push-ups to get my arms freshly swole.
Hi love, bye love, I will miss my love.

You should switch days 2-3, and 5-7 to include biceps. Pop some roids as well and you just may pass for a young Lorezo Fertitta!

I don't train, but my brother (17) trains TKD and Jeet Kune Do, in addition to a little BJJ. When I'm over there for holidays or whatever, we grapple and I end up winning 9/10 times by nature of being much larger and stronger... I'll break his triangle attempts by standing up, for example. He's very weak. Not even going to attempt to strike with him, he'd ruin me death by a thousand cuts style. He's been a black belt for a couple years.

Is he an mma fan? Does he love Ben Saunders as much as I do? :)

Not at all, he hates all forms of violence... I don't even think he likes TKD all that much which is strange because he's been doing it for over a decade now, but he does enjoy leading classes and workshops. He's more interested in the TKD for self-defense and personal discipline model than using it to potentially harm others. He got into BJJ through another one of his brothers (his half brother, not related to me) who trains in San Jose and is semi-serious about MMA as a career.

Thinking about this, you have to have some technique though, right? Have you trained in the past? I mean otherwise he'd probably be able to catch you with SOMETHING. I mean Helio didn't whoop every dude's ass in Brazil way back when because he fought dudes who weren't stronger than him. :)

Oh, he gets me... about 10% of the time, usually with armbars. Primarily, I RNC him or pull guard and guillotine. No, I never trained in grappling. I've definitely applied some things I've learned from watching MMA and though he has some formal experience, a few months worth of two a week classes, the skill to size ratio is still in my favour... I just overpower him to get better positions with next to no technique. In a year, even though I'll still have the physical advantage because he's a small guy, I don't expect our little exhibition contests to be close. (Not trying to sound like a bad ass, because I'm super wussy)

I do muay thai, but haven't trained in a few months.

I have a good friend who is a very talented fighter, who I run with and try to spar with whenever I feel lIke I can get a shot in when he isn't looking. :) (I have bruises from a BBQ last week.)

I did bit of boxing when I was in my early twenties and really want to find a good judo dojo, but have to get settled in.

When I have kids, they will train, no doubt. (OR I will be disappoint.)

And, I'm just a fan. Ultimate respect to anyone who can in there and fight, it makes me very nervous even thinking about it.

Out of curiosity, what do you like about muay thai? And why judo for the future?

Muay thai. Like I said, got into it through a friend. First off, workout is so awesome. Like, kick your ass so bad you want to die bad, I love that. I loved the fact that I walked in and started shadow bowing and had to then account for the fact that if I threw a straight punch or some sort of combo, that someone could throw a headkick, or a knee to my unguarded mid-section and KO me like. I liked how it made me re-think striking and the consequences of predictable, telegraphed shots. Also, it got me in great shape and quick. After four months, I banged the hottest girl I have in years and my confidence flew up and I felt very happy. Again, I plan to start again in August/Sept, just busy times these days.

Tried BJJ a few times, not for me. Love it, but I hate someone's crotch in my face. Amazing to watch, I just can't get into doing it.

Judo, because it is the general base of many martial arts and I want to be able to pull off those crafty leg swipes and hip tosses that just amaze me every time I see them.

I know everyone has different tastes and opinions, all good with me. I just can't see any negative with someone training some martial arts. It will help you in so many ways.

I feel like judo goes really well with muay thai as well, just because of the nature of muay thai and the potential for the clinch game. Thanks for sharing.

I think so too. My friend is a blue shorts in muay thai in Toronto and a black belt in Aikijujutsu.

But I also know a guy who fought for KOTC who talk sh*t about muay thai any chance he gets. Now, he's a bully, but he seems to think the only thing good about MT is the elbows.

Also know a boxer (ammy) who claims leg kicks are gay and that he'd tune any martial artist in the standup.

It's all opinions.

Did judo for a while until I blew out my knee.

Would like to pick something up again, but time, availability, the bum knee, and a reasonable level of English instruction are obstacles.

I kind of have the opposite situation. My new job leaves me with a TON of free time. Hoping to get into some training soon. Thinking I want to do some jits, but its harder picking a place to train than I thought. Seems like some decent stuff in Wisconsin/Milwaukee though, surprisingly.

Its one of 2-3 places I'm looking into. What is your experience with him if I might ask? From my understanding he's at worst the second best grappler in the state. Pretty sweet.

Way, way too nervous that I'd see Anthony around.

 On a serious note, thanks for the suggestions guys, I live very close to both of those places.
