If we don't get Unibrow it might be smart to delay the name change. That way we can have a > 33% winning percentage when we do finally change so positive vibes are felt.

Re: Charlotte Hornets?
How about the Carolina Cougars? The uniforms are sexy as hell, plus they have some good history in Carolina.
^I agree with Crunk, if we get Davis, it would be the perfect time to change our name.

Re: Charlotte Hornets?
even if they did decide to change the name, i could see them dragging their feet and not actually having the name change official until next summer. the NBA might even require a full year. i think expecting a name change to start next season is highly optimistic for those wanting a change.

Bonnell has stated on his twitter that he has heard from "people in the know" that it could take a minimum of two years and upwards of 10 million to rebrand.
But since he has stated as much it will now probably be available within 6-8 weeks for free.

Re: Charlotte Hornets?
two years sounds extreme. that would be a long wait. the buzz of a name change would probably have worn out by then.

Re: Charlotte Hornets?
I can't see the league having some issue with the change (delaying the implelemtation for fear of confusion). However, rebranding does take a lot of time. Orders go in for merchandise way ahead of the date these items are available. Lots of work required. It would definately take a full season, unless this was already in the works and being kept top secret.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

Tom Benson nailed it.

The name Hornets belongs to Charlotte, it means nothing to New Orleans

With Benson making remarks like that with Stern Sitting right next to him, I'd say the availability issue is a done deal.
The fastest branding turn around time I can recall was the OCK Thunder. In a 3-4 month period they went from having no design, logo or color scheme to opening night with jerseys, merchandise etc all being available.
The greater challenge will be faced by NO.
A Hornets re-brand on our end would certainly be no easy task either and there would be logistical hurdles to be sure. However, the old Charlotte era team logo, color scheme, jersey design, mascot and brand identity etc already exist and would be ready to go. It would just be a matter of implementation.
I would leave everything just as it was when they left and wouldnt monkey around with anything.

Re: Charlotte Hornets?
Wow, majority of the people who voted in the poll wants to get back the Hornets monicker.
Let's wait and see for MJ's reaction on this in the coming days or weeks.

I don't think they are allowed to comment until the name is available per Bonnell. Although I've seen then comment before.

Re: Charlotte Hornets?
the poll has 2,770 votes so far and 87% want hornets, only 3% want bobcats, 10% between cougars, other and i don't care.
there is no way this isnt happening. its just a matter of when. no matter what MJ and the bobcats think about this issue they would be nuts to ignore such overwhelming support for a name change.
whether you like it or not, i think we all need to mentally prepare for this name change. scoop up your bobcats gear while you can. it will be gone in 2 years or less.

Re: Charlotte Hornets?
Bobcats were such a terrible name to begin with that it didn't really stand a chance. I don't even like the name Cougars which is why I wanted Flight.
That being said Im happy the Hornets are finally coming home.

I think this a great thing for the team and fans...we can put the robert johnson and his bobcats and past and move forward with a name that is ours and has history here....that said you better get some bobcats gear now because it will be popular in the future....more popular than it ever was today

Re: Charlotte Hornets?
@ d123 - i checked the sonics > thunder timeline. you are right. it was only a few months between names. the team was officially sold to the OKC on 7-2-2008. they had thunder logos, jerseys etc.. in place for games starting in october of 2008.
the timeline for the bullets > wizards looks like this:
november 1995 - owner announces he wants to change name and will be put to fan vote
http://www.nytimes.com/1995/11/10/sport ... tml?src=pm
february 1996 - fans vote for wizards as the new name
http://articles.baltimoresun.com/1996-0 ... in-bullets
may 1997 - new name wizards becomes official.
so 3 months between announcing intentions of changing name and deciding on wizards. then another 15 months to make it official. 18 months between wanting name change and making name change official. in our case, we would skip the first 3 months of that process since the new name is already decided. so if the washington can go from bullets to wizards in 15 months, why would it take a "minimum of 2 years" to go from bobcats > hornets, especially when logos and uniforms are already basically designed.
i am not sure who told bonnell a minimum of two years, but that just seems to be the maximum, not minimum. thunder did it in 5 months, wizards in 15.

this movement is really sad. its being pushed by a bunch of 20-30 guys who say they want their childhood team back blah blah. guess what, you're grown men now and there are kids out there now who are attached to THIS team and are growing up with it NOW and you basically want to take it away from them to fulfill your own nostalgic desires. kinda disturbing and selfish

Re: Charlotte Hornets?
Looks like a lot more than 20-30 guys to me. Up to 3,000 votes for the Hornets now. There are more votes for Cougars and 'I dont care' than the lowly Bobcats name.
Name change is imminent.

Why is it sad?
I don't see many kids attached to the Bobcats, they are all wearing Charlotte Hornet Throwbacks because thats what is in style.
Futhermore, The kids today can still have this team... The same players they are rooting for now, for the most part would still be here next year- they would just have a better looking jersey on.
It's the best of both worlds.
