Atlanta Falcons 2012 NFL Draft Thread
If the Falcons can some how get Whitney Mercilus and Bruce Irvin in the draft, then i would call it a huge success.
Falcons don't have a first round pick, but even if they did, i would still want them to get Whitney Mercilus, so if he ends up falling to the Falcons in the 2nd, then as far as im concern is that, the Julio trade never happened.
I've seen both Whitney Mercilus and Zach Brown as mid first round picks in some mocks and 2nd round picks in other mocks, so if one of them falls to the Falcons, the birds have to take one of them.
If both Whitney and Zach are off the boards, then it might be too hard to pass up on some offensive guys like Lamar Miller or Stephen Hill. Lamar could be a great young RB to pass the torch too, because Turner only has few years left. Stephen Hill is just awesome, he looks like Calvin lite. Both Hill and Miller could contribute right away on special teams as rookies.
The Falcons have to target Bruce Irvin in the later rounds. He looks like the classic 3-4 OLB. He has the speed and bulk to put immediate pressure on the QB.
Falcons need a ILB after Lofton, but LB and DE core in this draft looks slow, and doesn't look that good. Bobby Wagner is the only guy who excites me. Wagner has been super productive the four years he has been at Utah, but i really don't know where he is going to go in the draft.
Falcons can always use some help at OL, Donald Stephenson looks like a good late round pick. He is a big guy with good feet.
Falcons don't really need DT, bird look solid in that position, but Jaye Howard, or DaJohn Harris could fit into Mike Smith's system.

I wouldn't mind getting Brandon Boykin in the 2nd round. A good Corner with Elite Speed who's a specialist at kickoff and punt returns. He's also from UGA and he's scored 3 offensive TDs this year. Don't believe me check this out

A replacement for Lofton is for sure. I'm very upset about him leaving and the way we handled free agency.

Re: Atlanta Falcons 2012 NFL Draft Thread
^ With regards to Lofton and Abraham, for the Falcons' second round pick, my draft board would be in this order:
1. Whitney Mercilus DE
2. Zach Brown OLB
3. Lamar Miller RB
4. Stephen Hill WR
5. Bobby Wagner ILB
Hopefully the Falcons' draft can go something like this:
2nd round - Whitney Mercilus DE
3rd round - Bobby Wagner ILB
5th round - Bruce Irvin OLB/DE
6th round - Jaye Howard DT
7th round - Donald Stephenson OT
1. Whitney Mercilus DE
2. Zach Brown OLB
3. Lamar Miller RB
4. Stephen Hill WR
5. Bobby Wagner ILB
Hopefully the Falcons' draft can go something like this:
2nd round - Whitney Mercilus DE
3rd round - Bobby Wagner ILB
5th round - Bruce Irvin OLB/DE
6th round - Jaye Howard DT
7th round - Donald Stephenson OT

Is Brandon Boykin projected to go in the second round? I thought it would be 3rd+, not 2nd.

He's projected to go right where we are in the late 2nd, the last mock draft I saw had him going to the Saints with the 60th pick

Falcons also targeting Joe Adams who's the best returner in the draft, we don't need another WR but he would be a Weems replacement who'll get picked up in the 4th or 5th round.

FOX Sports' Jay Glazer reports the Falcons have jumped into the Asante Samuel trade talks.
According to Glazer, the talks are "continuing," and could go "either way." Atlanta has joined Denver and Tennessee in kicking the tires on Samuel, though ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Denver is no longer a likely landing spot for the three-time Pro Bowler. Schefter believes Samuel could be had for little more than a sixth-rounder, but even that could be prohibitive for a Falcons team that has just five picks before the seventh round. Atlanta also has big money committed to corners Brent Grimes and Dunta Robinson, making it ultimately unlikely they acquire Samuel and some form of his monster contract.

Falcons hope to unearth a gem at pick 55
With a record number of underclassmen declared for the NFL draft, the Falcons, who do not have a first-round pick, hope to unearth a gem with the 55th pick in the draft.
With 65 early entrants, the talent pool is bigger (the previous record was 56 last year), and some players who would have been first-round picks will be pushed into the second round of the draft, which will be held Thursday through Saturday in New York.
The Falcons’ first-round pick was traded to Cleveland last year as part of the trade that landed wide receiver Julio Jones.
Georgia Tech wide receiver Stephen Hill and Georgia tight end Orson Charles are in the group of underclassmen.
Hill was advised to stay in school because he didn’t have the potential to be drafted in the first three rounds. He elected to leave school anyway and dazzled scouts at the NFL scouting combine with his speed and leaping ability. He now is projected to go in the first round.
Charles, after running a slow 40-yard dash and getting charged with driving under the influence, is not projected to be selected in the first round. If there is a run on tight ends, he could get drafted before the Falcons pick and push down another player in the draft.
NFL teams are challenged by the high number of early entrants because they cannot speak to them during the season when they are visiting the college campuses. They have to activate their files after the season and start feverishly researching their ability and character.
“We all have to be mindful of the potential players that will declare,” Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff said. “That is done more from a standpoint of making sure your research is done from a film evaluation standpoint.” http://www.ajc.com/sports/atlanta-falco ... 25345.html

i would love Asante Samuel for a 6th round pick, i might be okay with giving up a 5th round pick:
2nd - Bobby Wagner
3rd - Bruce Irving
5th - Asante Samuel (via trade)
2nd - Bobby Wagner
3rd - Bruce Irving

Re: Atlanta Falcons 2012 NFL Draft Thread
It sounds like a deal being agreement upon......
ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Albert Breer both report the Falcons are closing in on a trade for CB Asante Samuel.
It's likely for a sixth-round pick. Atlanta's interest in Samuel wasn't just a smokescreen to get Brent Grimes to sign his franchise tender. As NFL.com's Gregg Rosenthal points out, even with Samuel restructuring his contract, the trio of Samuel, Grimes, and Dunta Robinson would be the most expensive in NFL history. Robinson's $5 million salary is fully guaranteed, which means he or Grimes will likely see plenty of time in the slot. The Eagles, meanwhile, will have close to $20 million in cap space after the trade.

"Asante Samuel was willing to restructure his contract to play for the Atlanta Falcons.
"I wanted to be a Falcon, so we made it work," Samuel said.
The Falcons gave up only a seventh-round draft pick Wednesday when they acquired the four-time Pro Bowl cornerback from the Philadelphia Eagles."
Wow, only a 7th round pick!!!

Wow my main man Bruce Irvin, who was projected to go in the 4th round, and who i was willing to grab in the 2nd round, just went 15th overall in the 1st round.
Too bad, but good luck to Bruce.

Zach Brown was off the board. my safety picks of Bobby Wagner and Bruce Irvin are gone. at this point, I had Lamar Miller and Vinny Curry as my top two at the 55th pick
Falcons ended up getting Peter Konz in the 2nd round. I would rather have Lamar Miller and i would have drafted Lamar at #55, but Konz does remind me of Alan Faneca, i do hope Konz does end up being a pro bowl lineman
i think i would target Jonathan Massaquoi (maybe Miles Burris) in the 3rd round.

Re: Atlanta Falcons 2012 NFL Draft Thread
I like the Konz pick the 2nd round, he was suppose to be a first round pick but fell to us, but man the 3rd round was disappointing, Lamar Holmes from Southern Miss, we should've gotten Orson Charles who at first was projected to go to us in the 2nd round but he's still on the board, or to at least get Massie who was also projected to go late first but who's also still on the board

^ Holmes was such a weird pick, especially with Massie still on the board, that maybe Dimitroff is a genius and knows alot more than us and Holmes will turn out to be a multiple pro bowl OL?!?!?!?
I still would have defiantly picked Lamar Miller in the 3rd. he looks like the next Frank Gore, and the Falcons desperately need a young replacement for Turner.
I'm glad the Falcons got at least one pass rusher in Massaquoi
but Falcons didn't address one thing about the LB situation and couldn't even get late round guys like Marcus Dowtin, Adrian Hamilton, or Miles Burris

The 5th round pick really was terrible. We got a FB when Manning was still on the board, Manning was the perfect OLB for us and he was projected as a 2nd round pick. I honestly don't know what TD was thinking with that pick. Maybe it'll work out.

I have no idea who we selected since I just arrived back in town from being out of the country for five days. I had no access to the net or tv. I hope to review and research all of our selections tomorrow. How does everyone think we did?

Re: Atlanta Falcons 2012 NFL Draft Thread
i just read that the Falcons wanted defensive guys, but nobody fell, so Dimitroff wanted to address the lack of 3rd and short and 4th and short conversion the Falcons had last year, so that is why they drafted Konz and Bradie Ewing.
i also read the reason why they took Lamar Holmes is because he is a high character guy and Dimitroff thinks he can out hard work every other OL that was ranked higher then him.
