anyone else miss the blue and gold?

Post#1 » by ST21 » Wed Apr 18, 2012 1:56 am

i really liked the new uni's at first, but as the season went on i began to miss the blue and gold more and more. the new jerseys seem like they were modeled after this.

Image

colors so dull and boring. the wizards name across the chest just looked bad on the old school style uni.

i was ready for a change but now that we got one i realize how cool and unique or old jerseys were. something about that gold outline around the blue that just made the jerseys pop.

anyone else agree?

In a sort of Stockholm Syndrome kind of way, yes. I wasn't wild about the blue that the old uniform used; it was always my contention that if you're going to use a lighter shade of blue and to call yourself the Wizards you might as well go whole hog and sport a really bright royal blue to look suitably mystical and the typography on the set was a bit ridiculous. Unsurprisingly I'm not thrilled about the darker blue in the current set because navy and red is just about the deadest horse that can be beaten in sports branding but mostly at this point I mostly remember the older set fondly because I associate it with the wild and woolly days of Gilbert and first round exits every year. I do think it was really nice how clean the home uniform in the previous set was. So yes, kinda, a bit.

Nope. Good riddance.

The only complaint I have about the new jerseys are that it's hard identifying players during games because the lines cross the number on the backside of the jersey. Someone else proposed this idea, but I would like the lines on the back of the jerseys be removed so it's easier to read jersey #'s.

Nope, not even a little. I never liked the powder blue main color, and the uniforms themselves were always pretty unappealing. I will admit to liking gold as an accent color quite a bit though; my hope was that the new uniforms would be black and gold. But regardless, I still like our current uniforms and color scheme quite a bit, even if the latter is fairly generic.

yeah true. i'm pretty sure ted even responded to that at one point in the season if i remember correctly. i think it will be addressed in the near future.

but overall the new uni's just seem dull and boring. As the poster above you mentioned the red white blue color scheme has been beaten to death. i realize if there is any team that should use it, it should be us, being in the nations capital. but the wiz were way too late to the party and just't didn't successfully execute it imo.

As long as we don't roll out in those things TOR was wearing, I'm good.

I liked those gold and black jerseys we would occasionally wear, and those orange Bullets ones too(actually have an autographed Jamison one of those framed and hanging on my wall).

No. The new uniforms are one of the few things this franchise has done right in recent memory.

I actually do kind of miss them. I really like the new jerseys though.

Love the home jerseys. Not a fan of the road ones. Far too much red.

i agree.

they need to re-design the away jersey to be primarily one colour, maybe have a red set and a blue set as our ALT. plus remove the stripe at the back, it is hard to read the numbers unless you have a 185" tv or opera glasses.

but yeah i love the way the home jerseys look. normally when i buy a jersey i buy the away variant, they usually look the best. im saving some spare change for a home jersey in a few months, hopefully gonna say Davis on it.

Well, in fairness, we took Mike Pence off their hands. Taking back Mahinmi is the least they can do.

I think everyone would feel more positive about the red jersies IF THE TEAM ACTUALLY WON WEARING THEM. Ugh.

Don't like the navy blue to be honest. I wish we had the same blue from the Bullet days and more blue to balance the red.

But other than that, I like our new jerseys very much

I guess aesthetically the new look is OK: not good, but also not a bad departure from the old ones.

But design should balance aesthetics with functionality. I can't understand why more people aren't upset about the player numbers overlaid across contrasting light and dark colors, without an adequate demarcating border to highlight the number. Players' numbers are destined to be difficult to read to many people and in many situations.

I saw that problem as soon as they took the court. How did they miss that, or did the team even have any sensible method of review? Maybe it was designed by Leonsis' nephew, or by a design firm that saw the chance for a quick buck with an easy to please/fool customer.

This design failure points to a system failure. The new uniforms are a reminder that the new owner still has much of the same old broken operation going.

New uniform=Wizard's history of failure.

Hated the old jerseys. The new ones are ok....To Caps esque with the red IMO. Would have liked to see them bring something new to the table for the Wiz.

I love the new jerseys, with the exception of the visibility issue for the numbers. Eliminating the back stripe and/or picking a larger/wider font will easily fix that.

The old blue jerseys were washed out. The word mark on the chest was bleh.

Now, I know I'm in the minority, but I actually kinda liked the layout of the gold jersey/black short combo. I have a pair of the black shorts (well, I own a pair of white home and blue away shorts, too), and I thought it was an interesting look.

But, count me on board w/ the new kits. The wordmark looks great, the shorts are great (I'm looking forward to buying a pair) and, once they get around to adjusting the numbers on the back, it'll be a near-perfect uni set.

I love our new whites, am 'eh' about the reds though they have a classic look and feel. I liked the old blue and gold just fine, liked the idea of our gold pyjamas if not quite the execution (didn't mind the black shorts, but the shiny sateen tops were a little too knock-off victoria's secret) liked the orange crush jersey's. These ones are fine, though I agree on the numbers.

Actually, a cool inset around the numbers to break up the stripe could work as well. Kinda like what they do on soccer kits. Now, I don't like the USA's new barbershop pole striped jersey, but it illustrates how a number could be integrated into a stripe on the back:

Image

Of course, note how the USA kit breaks up the red stripes, leaving an easy-to-read blue number on a white field. In contrast, if you break up the white stripe on the Wizards away jersey, you'd be left w/ navy numbers thinly outlined in silver on a red field. That may not provide enough contrast. At the end of the day, they need to go with a bolder, wider number font.
Always remember, my friend: the world will change again. And you may have to come back through everywhere you've been.

I'll also add, because I think it's hilarious, that as soon as my wife saw the team take the floor in their new uniforms, she keyed in on the chest high stripe and said it looked like they were wearing training bras. That part doesn't bother me as much as it does her, but since she pointed it out, I can't not see it.
