Using Cordero in the 8th inning there was absolutely absurd considering who he was facing (righties with huge splits in Pena, Scott, and Joyce) and who this team currently employs for such situations (Oliver, Perez). That didn't cost them tonight, but it will very soon if Farrell keeps sticking to those ridiculous defined bullpen roles.

his inning went well. farrell shouldnt have had that shift on in the 8th inning, considering what pena did before. dumb move!

It doesn't matter whether his inning went well. His use still didn't make a bit of sense.

And if Pena wants to attempt to bunt every AB, it eliminates his power from the game, so I'm OK with that.

well i think the money paid to cordero has to be put to use. kinda political. hes not awful. but he hasnt been lights out. (neither has casey) so it makes sense for his use in the 8th.

Who cares how much hes paid Janssen had a 2.45 FIP last year. 2.54! Coco hasn't been less than 3.10 in the last 4 years. Depth is nice to have but the best pitcher should be pitching.

read my part again ****. did i say i'm paying them? they signed coco for 4.5 million and for 1 year. they wanna get their money worths. his experience as a closer is an asset to them. and to put him as the 8th inning man over jannsen makes sense.

Easy. Apparently its Rogers money and all he is trying to say is that it looks bad on AA if he isn't ever used. A discussion had to be made between AA and Rogers where AA had to sell Rogers on Cordero, and obviously he did. It just looks bad if he rides the bench now.

Sorry going to have to disagree with you there. If we went by experience we never would have trade Vernon Wells and filled our roster with unproven (for lack of a better word) kids.

FIP is a great stat, much less volatile than ERA. When used in conjunction with LOB% it can tell a lot about pitchers. Casey has had a significant enough sample size too.

I'd say statistically speaking, I'd use Casey. But we won't, for reasons you have already mentioned.

NOPE! our bullpen last year sucked and we needed some proven vets (dont tell me rauch or francisco) were. the hitting and pitching are different planes. we needed stability in the bullpen.

also stats dont tell everything. id take experience into consideration. stay behind your computer and rely on stats all you want, but stats wont tell you the whole story!

Again, statistically speaking Vernon was on the decline even before he signed that contract.



I understand why we traded Vernon, but you can't argue he isn't a veteran.

Frank Francisco was a proven vet, his career FIP was 3.54 over 338 IP. He appeared in 335 games and no matter how you spin it, was very successful.

Casey is the better pitcher. Cordero is the definition of declining even by your standards (lost a lot of FB velo) and his career numbers aren't even better than Franciscos.

Yes, of course. But mainly I would prefer just playing the matchups. If guys have struggled their entire careers against lefties, use a lefty.
