While I would L..O..V..E to get the color scheme back I was never to keen on the name Hornets. To me the name Hornets is no better than Bobcats. I would love to apply the colors to a new name like the Carolina Flight. Which reminds me of the real reason I hate UNC. I hate the fact that they have sole proprietory rights over the knick name Tarheels. That is the state knickname. Why does one college team own the knickname that should be the alias of all North Carolina teams?

At least hornets holds a historical context.

Another team's historical Context. The Hornets turned their back on us, and left us for another city who has yet to be as good to them as we were.

That's right, because a family of hornets raised Johnny Appleseed. I forgot.

But what's the history anyway? How big of an impact could some bugs really have?

And Flight, Tarheels, Bobcats, and Cougars don't? I'd be willing to wager that any of these have had as major an impact on NC history as any Hornets may have. Matter of fact Flight and Tarheels are so far in front of the others that they might as well turn around and go back to the house.

Tarheels and Flight do, but Bobcats and Cougars really don't have much relevance at all.

I did not know that. Count me in. The name Hornets does belong in Charlotte.

I honestly think that the historical context thing matters here. I was born raised here in Charlotte. Most of the folks I know moved here and don't really care about the Hornets name. It think that's true of most transplants and, sadly, Charlotte in general these days. However as you move outside of town and into the community in the broader metro area, that name does matter.

And no you can't do Tarheels - too much overlap with UNC. Flight is still contested by Ohio. Cougars is even more HS than Bobcats.
My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody

Uh.. that is what I was complaining about. Why does some regional college team monopolize a state knickname?

Who cares what Ohio wants to contest? My license plate still says, " NC First in Flight " doggoneit.

Is there some team in Ohio that goes by Flight? Or is that just the state itself protesting NC's claim of "First in Flight"?

the fact that the charlotte-mecklenburg police department uses a hornets nest as their badge should signify the historical impact of the "hornet" and the term "hornets nest" to charlotte. we are the "hornets nest". after gold mining and the charlotte mint, the revolutionary war ties to "hornets nest" is probably the the most significant history attached to this city.

thanks for posting that blackout. i had asked at the very beginning of this thread (not in sarcasm) if everyone understood the true history behind "hornets" and charlotte. i'm glad someone at BCP did a good job of putting it together.

Yeah I don't go to BCP a lot but I frequently check in to see if there are any new Ballwhore ramblings (they're entertaining at least), plus I knew there was a lengthy thread on this discussion there and wanted to see some other opinions on it. I'm in NC, not Charlotte, so I knew about a good chunk of the history (Revolutionary War, other sports teams that used the Hornets name), but the Police Department thing was new to me. Very cool, solidified my thinking that this is where the Hornets name belongs.

I knew about the history, but was completely unaware that the police department uses that on their badge.

Nice.

i would hope so. we should keep the bobcats franchise history (as well as also using the charlotte hornets history). it should be charlotte pro honor. i'd love to see muggsy, dell and wallace all have their jerseys retired at time warner arena some day. they can hang with bobby phills in the rafters.

I'd imagine that the hornets jerseys retired currently in Louisiana would remain retired there, and not here unless we felt like it.

Return to Charlotte Hornets
