Bynum will have same knee procedure as Kobe this summer

Lakers center Andrew Bynum is not interested in playing in the Olympics because he wants extra rest and also plans to undergo the same innovative knee procedure that Kobe Bryant had in Germany last summer.

"I've got to take care of my legs in the off-season," Bynum said Friday. "I've got some things planned for my knees.... I've got to do some therapy that I'm going overseas to do."

Bynum has undergone surgical procedures on each of his knees in recent years.

The procedure in Germany is much less invasive and marketed as Regenokine or Orthokine.

It targets proteins or molecules called interleukin that cause inflammatory responses. Blood is removed from the affected area of a patient and spun in a centrifuge. The antagonists of interleukin are removed to create a serum that is injected back into the targeted area.

The recovery period is remarkably short. Bryant has often complimented the results of the procedure, which he had on his ailing right knee and troublesome left ankle during two separate visits to molecular orthopedist Peter Wehling.

"I feel a lot stronger and a lot quicker and able to get to the basket and free-throw line," Bryant said earlier this season....

just keep taking care of those legs and im happy

Well 3 years from now, they'll just have some leg transplant that will make him new. If only they could transplant something in him that makes him want to defend every night

Basically Dwight Howard's mentality without Dwight Howard's vagina

anyone know what the cost is of this procedure? i could see athletes of all sports doing this...i wonder if the olympic committee would be the first ones to ban this procedure since track and field athletes would love to have these procedures done.

You got people on the GB hating on him because he doesn't want to play in Olympics. That place never fails to amaze me.

And had he committed, there would be cries of "Great he's just gonna get himself hurt" and "the country doesn't need to represented by a thug/crybaby/injury prone child" etc.

He's 24. If he wants to do the Olympics, he's got a lot of time to do it.

Bynum's injuries were mostly freak accidents. This season just proves that. If he can survive the grind that this season has been, he'll be fine. Just had some bad luck. How many people would have knee injuries if guys crashed into their legs every day?

Glad he's going.
Question his maturity at times but never question his drive.
Drew definitely has a go getta mentality and I'm lovin it.
I hope he continues working with Alex Ariza and Freddie Roach.
As this season as proof, it's no secret their offseason trainings on Andrew are working.

I would like Drew to bring home a Gold Medal this summer but there will be plenty of time in the future to do so like others already said in this thread.

Wasn't there a rule Colangelo made a couple years back that any American player applying to representing Team USA had to make a two year commitment?

Drew hasn't even had 1 invite to any of Team USA's practices.

Surpised that most of the moronic Laker haters in the GB that are so infatuated over stats, numbers and rules moreover than results that they didn't bring this up.

As long as the PRP therapy isn't secretly killing them in a long the long run, it'll be come common place in the US soon enough. It just hasn't had much clinical testing or scientific explanation to back it. Glad Bynum's trying to get all the help he can though.

stevenson had it done, he said its 12k per knee, if you go to GER, you would also need to factor in travel expenses

and a lot of international sports players have had this done, you can see that in wikipedia

as far as teams paying for it, i think that is hit or miss since this is not a approved procedure here, they may not pay for it

I almost choked to death on that one, laughing.

Your posts might oughta come with a warning.
