OT: Pineda has labrel tear, out for season
Seems he threw 15 pitches today and basically said, no mas, still feeling pain and weakness in the shoulder. He's being sent back to NYK for a dye-comparison type MRI, and Girardi says he's going to be out until June, but could be longer if he has significant damage that hasn't been detected previously.

I'm torn.
He was a keeper in my fantasy, but I'm happy we don't have to face him.

They can claim all they like. In Blue Jays vs. Kenny Williams, the seminal case in injured shoulder trade fkery, Chief Justice Bud Selig made clear that caveat emptor is the guiding principle here...if a player is injured and you fail to catch it during their physical, it's your own damned fault.

I'm hoping Pineda is torn and done for the year. Sorry about your fantasy team...

Any other team would be devastated by a trade result like this.... someone would seriously be on the hot seat
However, its the Yankees..... they can just buy a better pitcher than Pineda when times comes or a better hitter than Jesus when time comes.
no biggy for the YANKS..... great for JAYS though, Pineda was a beast when healthy

B/w the Red Sox blundering at almost every turn, and this injury to Pineda for the Yankees, i'm liking the way the AL East might turn out this year.
Now all we have to do is get our batters to start hitting like they're worth a damn and we'll be fine.

Not necessarily; both the Yankees and Red Sox are up against their payroll ceilings at the moment. It's why the Sox have had difficulty fleshing out their bullpen, and why the Yanks weren't seriously in the running for some of the bigger names this off-season.
They'll free up some money this upcoming off-season, but rest assured, losing Pineda certainly hurts them.

Agreed. Now that there is a payroll ceiling, once we even get close to reaching it, it will be the better managed team (front office management) that wins, not money. To me the ceiling is better for the Jays than any other change in the CBA.
Keeps the Yankee's and the Red Sox's at a reasonable level.

Money still matters and will continue to matter, but yeah...if we can get to the point in a couple years where we're spending $90-120m efficiently, New York's spending $180m somewhat shakily, and the Red Sox are spending $160m terribly, we're in business.

Isn't it great when a plan comes together? I bet once we can, we spend above 120M. Not by much, but I can see 140 in our future.

Yes, and the Yankees are looking to get under the luxury-tax level ($189m) in 2014 because they can then reset the tax rate from 40% to 17%. And because they'll be under $189m, they will also be given a discount on the amount they have to contribute to revenue-sharing.
This is the reason they traded for Pineda. He's young, controllable, and will fit in with their other pitching prospects (Banuelos & Betances) who can round out their rotation on the cheap. They're really trying to be under the luxury-tax level for three years (2014-2016), which will save them just under $100 million.
Incredible.

I do think in the short-term the Yankees are going to get under the tax threshold for one year, but I don't think that means they're going to worry about the tax level long-term. Next offseason is going to be quite interesting as it's a guarantee at least two of Henry, Moreno, and Ilitch will be disappointed with the season and quite likely all three. Will they continue to push the arms race or will they decide just wildly throwing money around isn't going to solve the problem? I'm not sure we're seeing the stage where salaries level out around 180-200m for the big clubs. The inclusion of a few more teams may just push the Yankees and whoever cares to the join them to new unprecedented heights, after they get their re-set year of tax relief. I'd love to see this cost consciousness continue, but there's far more evidence that owners and GMs can be prodded into crazy and crazier spending than evidence they can maintain even a remote grasp on fiscal responsibility.
So while I think it's more likely than some around here that you see the Jays get into the 120m range, at that point it could easily be 50% less than the mainstream teams and less than half the biggest ones, same as it ever was.

No, not long-term, just three years. The new rates under the new CBA begin in 2014. They are trying their darndest to stay underneath 189m from 2014-2016. It will save them 100m. 40m in revenue-sharing and 60m in luxury-taxes. Of course, they'll use the savings to spend well over 200m in 2017 and beyond.
Again, this is why they traded for Pineda. Pitchers, on the open market, even number 2s and 3s, are more expensive than their equivalents (using WAR) in position players.

So much sympathy for the Yankees here. This is really too bad.

#Yankees Pineda surgery news example why velocity drops generate injury concerns. Also not good: shoulders much harder to fix than elbows.
Looks like he's out for a year, not just the season, might not pitch until next April. Team is optimistic, however, he can pitch again.
