I remember one game where he killed the Hornets while with the Celtics. We signed him the next year and I was ecstatic.

What!?! I never heard about that. I distinctly remember people making a huge deal out of Bob Johnson owning the team b/c he was black and it was historic. What a crock. Okay, I'm full on the "bring back the Hornets" bandwagon now.

No, African Americans that bought the Nuggets, I guess they aren't recognized as the 1st because they teamed up and never owned greater than 50%, although collectively they owned more than any other Nuggets investor. (making them technically Majority owners)

Your right though, I think the Latinized dude in Baseball was the first minority owner in any of the major league sports.

I think all but Hockey ( dont follow Hockey, so I could be wrong) now have or have had minority owners with the Jaguars purchase a few months ago.

Me too.

Any of you guys coming to the Swarm Time Warner rally for the season finale on Thursday?

I can't wait to hear MJs reaction to that at the year end press conference. I think it's safe to say he greatly underestimated the groundswell of support for a rebrand as he mentioned in his January Chairmans Corner letter.

Jordan wont comment until New Orleans officially changes names.

He can't comment on the name "Hornets" but, that shouldn't stop the local media from asking about a rebrand.

In January, in a Chairmans corner Q&A on the Bobcats website, MJ said he hasn't seen a groundswell of support for a name change. Since that point, there have been petitions, websites, twitter movements ,newspaper articles, a poll in the Charlotte Observer that had 84% of respondents favor Hornets as the nickname only 4% favored Bobcats, with the "Cougars" and "I don't care" having more support than the Bobcats. The local sports talk radio lines have had call after call asking for a name change. And now, there is even a documentary being filmed to show the support for rebranding. It's called We Beelieve.

The local media will not being doing there job if they let the team/MJ off easy on answering questions about this subject.

MJ can't say anything about the "Hornets" name but, damn sure can talk about his existing failed brand and the need to go another direction to generate some excitement.

Hornets Brand and potential Name Change is the lead story on the front page of the observer this morning.

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2012/0 ... -back.html

The article talks about how Charlotte Hornets retro gear is experiecing a resurgence of popularity and also mentions how the Bobcats are dead last in the league in merchandising sales.

I wish Benson would hurry up and start the process for the name change of New Orleans so we can get our ball rolling as well.

The trend now with some of the Hornets gear is sort of reminiscent of the trend back during late 80's and early 90's. Jordan should see this as an opportunity to market his Jordan brand. If and when the Hornets name is available, I can see Jordan going after it because of that and its popularity amongst Charlotteans.

After reading that article it really is a no brainer to rebrand to the Hornets again. I'm sure it would double or triple merchandise sales revenue. I mean if the Bobcats brought in 50 million and the Lakers 682.... the Charlotte Hornets for sure could get to 150 million annually.

Side note: 50 million dollars worth of Bobcats gear? What are they shipping it to Ethopia or something?

:D :D Take a look at the news conference where Stern and Benson made the announcement of the purchase of the team in New Orleans. Benson said that the teams name will be changed in the future to better reflect New Orleans. Marketing experts indicate that changing an organizations name( ie NCNB to Nations Bank) has a positive affect on branding and sales. The Hornets logo and name was Charlottes first idenity in the NBA. We All have good memories of the team when we filled the Hive.
Shinn screwed it up and greed took him to move theteam to New Orleans.
We need change to forget this season and the problems this team has had from the front office to the bench to the floor. Clean House and Bring on the Bugs.

As a former junior Charlotte Hornet, I'd still love for the name to come back and feel like it would make the Bobcats era eventually seem like a long nightmare I'd finally awoken from...

Seriously?

You are suggesting that if we trotted out this crap arse, 7 win team in blue and purple with a bee as a logo instead of a bobcat our merchandise merch would have tripled?

I doubt it.

Rick Bonnell ‏ @rick_bonnell

#Bobcats mark down everything in team story by 30 percent. The word purge comes to mind.
