The Cordero signing looks better and better every day.

Depending on how he does. He almost blew 1 save already.

But he didn't. Santos already blew 2. (Not saying Cordero is better than Santos)

BS is a bad stat but I'm just saying so far this season Cordero hasn't exactly passed the eye test.

Well, if we're going to lose someone to injury, might as well be a reliever. I wish the Jays would put someone like Perez in the closer role to pad his save stat so they can trade him to some idiotic gm for something good in the offseason.

He's doing nothing that a run of the mill middle reliever could do given the same opportunity. $4.5M for a mediocre relief pitcher is not that great, and probably could have been better spent elsewhere.

I'm just praying he can fluke his way to some more saves like getting lucky ground balls leading to double plays at the end of games. I really hope when Santos comes back he can throw strikes because both guys make me really anxious in close games. Where's '02-'04 Eric Gagne when you need him!

I know what you mean. I hope Cordero boost his trade value and Santos learns how to throw strikes.

What a horrid start for Santos. Hope Cordero does minimal damage.

At least this means Cordero won't be in high leverage set-up situations that he would likely blow. That's a real positive. He can kind of be hidden in that closer's role with frequent two and three run leads.

Exactly.

Loved the fact that he got to "close" the last couple games starting clean in the 9th with 3 run leads. You have to be pretty terrible to not come away with the save there.

Save the better relievers for the real important situations.

Santos has started throwing and will begin long toss later this week, he hopes to be into bullpen sessions by next weekend. I think we should expect him back by the 2nd week of June, without any setbacks.

Another update from bluejays.com

http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20120527&content_id=32318476&notebook_id=32321616&vkey=notebook_tor&c_id=tor

"I think every time we've given you a time frame it has ended up being a little bit longer," Blue Jays manager John Farrell said. "I'd like to think he can get to that distance by the mid to latter part of this coming week.

"He has been out to 120 feet on flat-ground long toss with some aggressiveness. The kind of the earmark, or the threshold, with the flat-ground work is when he gets out to 150 to 175 feet and he passes that with no issues then the mound is the next step."Santos, 28, will eventually need to throw at least four to five bullpen sessions before going on an extended rehab assignment. In many ways, it's like starting Spring Training all over again, and as a result, he will not be back with the big league club anytime soon.

"Where the soreness is generated when he starts to get more aggressive, he'll feel a little bit in that same area," Farrell said. "We're taking baby steps to get past that pinpoint of the spot where he has felt it in the back of his shoulder."

Now seems like the we'll be lucky to get him back by August.

On a related note, Molina lasted one game at AAA before being demoted to AA and has been unimpressive. So far, the trade has been a wash.

Santos starting to throw bullpens

http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20120602&content_id=32643528&notebook_id=32643536&vkey=notebook_tor&c_id=tor

TORONTO -- Sergio Santos' throwing program is starting to evolve. The closer threw 25 pitches off a mound on Saturday and is scheduled to do the same on Monday.

Manager John Farrell referred to Saturday's session as a "controlled bullpen" that saw the right-hander throw only fastballs.

Farrell said that it wasn't a maximum-effort session and that there is still no timetable for Santos' return, but he believes the fact that he is throwing off a mound is encouraging.

"You can't fast-forward," Farrell said when asked when Santos could be back. "The calendar might say one thing, but his body is going to be [saying] another thing. You are probably looking at three or four bullpens before he sees hitters."

It's pretty much begun to feel like Santos isn't even on this team any more.

Santos has now thrown 3 bullpens , just fastballs and changeups. They will decide if he throws to some live batters next or needs another bullpen session. No surprise they're holding off on the slider until he gets full strength in his shoulder and elbow.
