Adam Lind, worst player at his position

Post#1 » by baulderdash77 » Wed Apr 25, 2012 2:12 am

In 2010 Adam Lind as a DH put up .309 wOBA - worst in the AL
In 2011 Adam Lind as a 1B put up .315 wOBA - worst in the AL
In 2012 Adam Lind as a 1B has put up a .291 wOBA - shockingly only 10th worst in the AL

This is the 3rd straight year that Lind could very well be the worst at his position in the league. At some point there has to be a recognition that 2009 is now 4 years ago and he's not fixing his swing any time soon. We have to move on and improve this team at a critical position. There's no way to contend if you're 1B isn't a good hitter.

That's exactly why we need to start looking internally. Give Cooper a shot and send Thames down to AAA to convert to a 1B. That should patch us over into the off season where we can pick up a true 1B.

You know who's Texas' first basemen? One of a select few 1b worst then Adam Lind.

Doesn't really prove much. There are always exceptions. Obviously if the rest of your lineup is hitting like .300 with a ton of HR and great pitching your going to do fine.

Having your 1B that far behind average does hurt, and unless you are in a extenuating set of circumstances, it is hard to overcome.

Or just platoon Adam Lind with a lefty masher and not give full starting time to a guy that can't hit for power and field.

We could do that. I don't mind Lind too much if he only faces RHP.

The Rangers don't have any qualified 1B this season.
But that Mike Napoli guy is pretty solid as the 3rd highest wOBA among 1B even though he 50% catcher/ 50% first base.
That Michael Young guy that played 40 games at 1B last year is pretty bad too. It's hard to have the defending batting champ sitting as a utility player & DH.

Lind is coming off back-to-back seasons with an OBP below .300

I don't see how we compete with that kind of production from 1B

You mean Mitch Moreland did not get 512 PAs last year? You just proved my point, Blue Jays can still compete with Adam Lind as their 1B as long as guys like Lawrie, Rasmus, Edwin etc. do an adequate job.

Of course its possible to win with Adam Lind as our 1B. You can win with a SP that has 33 GS, 33 losses.

It's just way easier to win without somebody bringing down the team.

I'm sure AA is working on it. He gave Hill time and it didn't work, so Lind's time will come to an end soon enough. Which bats are available though? We should have traded for Anthony Rizzo. He is off to a fast start in triple A.

Adam Lind's wOBA was lower than Mitch Moreland's last year but it was close. Last year the Rangers had 9 qualified hitters better than Lind though. He would have been the worst regular in their entire lineup.

Seriously you have a pretty weak argument.

Okay, clearly you have no reason daughter, so if you can quote me saying that then you win. But I never said that. I'm just saying there are always exceptions.

I think the Angels are guaranteed to trade an outfielder before the all-star break. Depending who we trade we can have Thames at 1st.

That's as irrelevent as saying you can become a billionaire after dropping out of college because Bill Gates did it as well. Texas has is pretty much loaded in every other positions. They could still dominate with a scrub playing 1st base, but certainly not us.

You know I agree with you, here. Cooper as a short term fix--not a bad idea, that. It might finally smack that grin off Lind's face. (What is it about horrible baseball players looking so complacent in their struggles. It must be all that squinting in the sun.) But long-term, Cooper is not a solution. He is, at best, a James Loney.

Which is why I have to caution you, and the board, in sitting on the expectation that AA signs or trades for a big bat at 1B. The Dodgers have been bought for 2 billion dollars. They are going to aggressively spend money this off-season, and next off-season, and they'll be a figure in trade talks--and they've got JAMES LONEY playing first base.

The Dodgers will be looking to upgrade 1B and they will try to outbid us in signing a bat this winter; if not, they'll be trying to trade for one, giving us competition there, too.

We have many more prospects and so can afford to make bigger deals than the Dodgers. But they have more money.

My hope is that AA makes a trade during the season.
