J.P. Arencibia, Winning at framing pitches

Post#1 » by baulderdash77 » Wed Apr 25, 2012 5:51 pm

I read a great article on the ability of catchers to frame pitches having a significant impact on the outcome of a game. It's here http://www.baseballprospectus.com/artic ... entMessage

A ball turned to strike is worth 0.13 runs for a team defensively. Over the past several seasons Jose Molina has been the best pitcher in all of baseball in framing pitches (turning balls into strikes) and has saved a total of 73 net runs in that time as a part time player.

I've noticed this year that JP has been getting a lot of borderline calls but I didn't know if it was above average or if he was winning his daily framing matchup. So I went through the past weeks games (it takes a lot of time to do this) and measured his net pitches framed vs the opposition net pitches framed.

Here's the results (net balls turned into strikes)

Apr 24 - JPA +5, Baltimore +3
Apr 23 - JPA +7, KC +5
Apr 22 - JPA +4, KC 0
Apr 21 - JPA +12, KC +12 (horrible umpiring wow)
Apr 20 - JPA +7, KC +4
April 19 - (Against Molina) JPA +2, Molina +2

The results are surprising but JPA has won or tied his pitching matchup every game in the past week including getting a tie against Molina who has been by far the best pitch framer in the last 4 years in Baseball.

In 6 games he's saved 37 pitches worth 4.81 runs versus 26 pitches for the other team worth 3.38 runs- a difference of 1.43 runs. That's a major impact in the game that's really hidden to everyone.

That's quite surprising. I have found his framing ability to be well below average and almost non-existent this year.

Now, if he could only catch throws from the outfield, throw runners out, properly apply tags, and block balls in the dirt.

Don't know about you but I thought JPA was doing an exceptional job at all of those outside of maybe applying tags. There's been a lot of wild pitches this year and JPA has done an exceptional job being on top of it. He's also caught people stealing multiple times and outside of that tampa game, has done a solid job.

I thought that epic eff-up he had on that laser-beam throw from Bautista was pretty egregious an error, but otherwise he has seemed OK. Certainly not a champ at controlling runners, but not bad.

Last Night:
JPA: 12 - Weiters: -2

The ump gave Drabek a strike about 1/2 a foot outside the plate against righties all night and he painted that spot all night.

Baltimore was hitting just outside that spot all night and the ump never gave that call. Also 3 pitches that were clearly inside the strike zone against lefties were called balls for Baltimore. 2 high and 1 low.

We still couldn't get hits and in this case it was probably more strikezone recognition.

Interesting stuff. And useful. I'm sure there's somebody out there that keeps track of this stuff league-wide, right?

That's interesting. Hell, yesterday you could even tell with the naked eye that we were getting a lot of borderline strikes, and the Orioles weren't.

Why are you copying and pasting my sentence verbatim?

It's just three posts up from your plagiarism.

Get your own sentences. At least re-word the thought. Shameless.

.. I didn't care enough to read the posts on this page as I figured most would be pro-JPA just like most of the fan base.

Next time I will search your accounts post on all threads to make sure a similar incident never arises. I apologize to you, your family, and fellow RealGm'ers for the harm I have caused. I will turn myself into police immediately following this post.

I'm glad you caught the cheek in my post and replied in good humour.

You are forgiven.

Your forgiveness is all I was gunning for. Sure I have a 20 year jail sentence now (just posted bail of 500k, apparently I'm a flight risk) but now that I got it, that's all that matters :)

Well now we identified another flaw in JPA's defense. Throws to first.
