Mayock has us taking Courtney Upshaw from Bama, NFL.com has us taking Perry, and Mel Kiper has us taking Doug Martin (worst case scenario here imo). I really like Mayock and that's the first mock I've seen with us getting Upshaw, which is interesting
Sounds like the D-line theory is gaining major traction.

Re: 2011/12 Draft Prospects
i would love to have Chandler Jones, and trade up to get mike adams 2nd round. i really think Chandler jones is gonig to be a franchise player and open up the door for us to trade Avril or replace KVB. i'm not high on Perry and i think Mercilus is a good but not great pick

Re: 2011/12 Draft Prospects
Avril cannot be traded before the start of official training camp, and that's only after he signs his tender.
Upshaw is a definite possibility too but I think he will be a Jet.

Jeff —
My father, who's a long-suffering Lions fan, basically went apoplectic when he saw how cheaply Asante Samuel went to the Falcons (both in terms of being traded for just a 7th rounder and the fact that he restructured for about $6M a year). Please help me make him feel better — do you have any inside info on why the Lions didn't pursue trading for him? I know we considered it last year, so does this mean that the Lions' brain trust now simply feels that Samuel has "jumped the shark?"
Thanks in advance for helping me talk my father down off the ledge!

Re: 2011/12 Draft Prospects
i'm pretty sure it has to do with Avril contract negotiations, the fact we still have to sign our draft picks, and the cap. We simply couldn't afford him. i thought the same way when i saw it

Yeah I don't think we have a spare 6 mil laying around. We're in some pretty tight financial times for the Lions

Samuel is 31, he's missed at least 3 games three of the last four seasons, his contract is still cost-prohibitive even after he redid it, and his play has slipped to the point where he either intercepts/PDs the throw or gets beat badly. His tackling is flat-out embarrassing to football players everywhere, makes Deion Sanders seem like Ray Lewis. We already have a younger version of that guy in Alphonso Smith and he drives Schwartz nuts.

Re: 2011/12 Draft Prospects
Any chance we trade any players tonight?
Avril is a no-go for reasons already pointed out.
But what about guys like Alphonso Smith, Erik Coleman, one of the DT's, or other? Any chance we deal a guy for a mid-to-late round pick at some point between today and the end of the draft? Any trade chatter?

Re: 2011/12 Draft Prospects
I doubt we trade up, no reason because at least one of the players that is of essentially equal value to the Lions (Kirkpatrick, Perry, Mercilus, Jones, Glenn, Reiff) should be there. Trade back is more likely but to where and for whom I couldn't tell you.
The most likely current Lion to be dealt is Fluellen, and I'll say that is part of a pot sweetener with a pick to move up a few spots in a middle round. Willie Young might have some value in that manner too. I know they have received calls about TE but it sure sounds like they are not interested in moving one.
This is my 8th draft in the business and I know less about what teams are doing this year than any other year even though I have more/better contacts than ever before. I think if most draftniks are honest they would tell you the same thing. Amazingly complex and variable draft this year.

Re: 2011/12 Draft Prospects
I'd love to trade back, depending on who is there. I would think Cleveland would be an ideal partner, given that they have a boatload of picks and may want to swoop in and snatch Weeden up.
