All I'm saying is we get a gold glove caliber first basemen, we all know how much that means after seeing Giambi there the past few years. He is a .3freeking36 career hitter who is the consumate professional. He has the prettiest swing I've ever seen, Giambi is off the books after next year, if Helton's range starts to falter who cares, we stick him at DH for the rest of his contract and he becomes our backup first basemen....

First, Helton is 33 going on 34. Why are you assuming that, even in the middle of his contract in 2008 and 2009, that he will be a gold glove first basemen? By the time his contract is over in 2011, he'll be 38. Second, he is a .336 career hitter because he plays in the best hitters park of all time. Every year, he shows ridiculous home/away splits that give you the idea that the only reason he has such inflated batting averages is because he plays in the best hitters park of all time. Third, do we really want another player clogging the DH spot? I don't know about you, but when Giambi is gone, I want Matsui taking the DH spot and getting a better fielder in LF. I don't want somebody like Helton having to be a DH and limiting our flexibility.

I'm just saying, depending on who we have to give up...and if Colorado would take on some of his salary I might do it. I don't think you can just SAY NO without looking into it. I trust Cashman's judgement, and if we can get Fuentes in the deal too, all the better.

For me, (as if it matters) this deal would all depend on how much of Helton's contract we give up. I don't mind the fact that he's a lefty -- the dude can still hack -- and the idea of Fuentes is very attractive. Still, I would imagine Colorado wouldn't want much; they would just want us to basically pay for their abomination of a contract.

Fuentes is attractive, Helton would be an upgrade over Doug, would I do it? Depends on what we have to give up and just how much of Helton's contract we'd be picking up.

I don't see why everyone wants Doug out of here so quickly. You can't upgrade his glove as he is pretty much as good as it gets. He has taken on a bit of a leadership role. You can always see him pumping up Arod and telling Arod what he needs to hear. Not to mention he is hitting a lot better than before. He has world series experience and he stuck it to the Red Sox. If the Yankees want a quick term jolt to their offense (which is what getting Helton would amount to) they might as well just try to reunite Junior with ARod. At least with Griffey his contract actually ends this decade.

And even at 37, he can't be any more ho-hum in the outfield than any of the guys they already have. You can DH him part of the time and rotate him into the OF (and give one of the other guys a break) the other half of the time.
