UFC 147 (6/23): TUF Brazil Finale (Franklin vs. Wandy)

Post#1 » by CPT » Thu Apr 26, 2012 2:02 pm

I guess this card needs a new thread.

Rumoured/announced so far:

Champ Jose Aldo vs. TBA (for featherweight title)*
Vitor Belfort vs. Wanderlei Silva
"TUF: Brazil" featherweight finals
"TUF: Brazil" middleweight finals
Mike Russow vs. Fabricio Werdum
Felipe Arantes vs. Milton Vieira

* - Not officially announced

It was mentioned in another thread that TBA appears to be Eric Koch.

I've been meaning to, but I'm way behind.

Has it started airing in the US yet? I'd be more inclined to keep up with it if more people were talking about it.

Wow. They're going to have to get Aldo to move up, or have Edgar come down.

This is kind of like Hendo/Jones, they're running out of bodies to put in front of these guys.

Koch has no chance, good fighter, way out of his league with a beast like Aldo.

UFC had better be careful moving forward. We're all hearing they're going to start doing more fights? Wow, that is going to seriously dilute the talent pool and pop of some of the bigger events imo.

I am have one buddy who I watch fights with, one. All of my other friends either think it is "stupid" or grew out of it and lost interest. One of my friend's was adamant we leave before Jones/Evans started because he wanted to hit the bar and told me it really wasn't a big deal. Of course, I met him later. Point is, the average fan seems to be losing interest while they increase the amount of events. I love it, but I'm not so sure UFC is going to be as huge as we all thought in 10 years, it might be plateauing right now.

Am I way off base on this? Do you guys know a lot of fans? I don't. This is basically my one place to talk in-depth with people who love the sport, because my buddies sure as hell don't wanna talk about it.

^ Yeah, I'm noticing that too. It seemed to have peaked in Q4 2009/Q1 2010. I'm not sure what's happened since then, maybe the market is too saturated? It doesn't help that UFC has been available on Fox, FX, Spike, and other networks all within the span of a few months.

I have one real life friend who follows MMA and he's getting frustrated with the abundance of events plus the preparation that goes into making sure nothing's on your schedule so you can watch 6-7 hours of fights on a Saturday (or Friday) night. His girlfriend is starting to hate him.

I am started to think Brock brought over more people than we may ever see again.

UFC 100 still seems like the biggest event ever.

When was the last time GSP co-mained?

He'd probably co-main behind Jones at UFC 200 if they're both still champions at that point, which would be nuts.

Aldo will get Brazilians through the door. But that's about it. It's not going to draw PPV viewers. I honestly have no idea who Koch is. I've seen the name.

TUF Brazil has like 6 eps so far. I think they may broadcast more than 1 a week. I see them on trackers. I can't handle subtitles and sports. If I wanted to read, I'd...listen to a podcast.

His last fight was a close contest against Brookins. It may have even be a split decision.

Before that he beat R. Assuncao (KO). Those were his only two ufc bouts.

The UFC has botched this Aldo fight, but mainly due to them not pushing the division enough. Hioki is a legit challenger and the clear #2 145 pound fighter in the world. He is the guy who should be fighting for the title, but the UFC has not done enough to get him out there to the casual fans. Hioki should get Aldo now, then the winner of Poirier/Korean Zombie, then Koch if he keeps winning.

Also, it sure would not hurt for the UFC to go out and get Kawajiri to strengthen the top of the division.

Agreed on Kawajiri, but what can the ufc do if Hioki doesn't want the fight?

This is the card in Brazil right? The blame ufc should be catching here is, idk, disregarding the United Nations. lol. A city where a UN meeting is held that same weekend sounds like the place Scott Coker would want to hold his HWGP finals.

People keep assuming Hioki turned the fight down, but I haven't read anywhere that he was offered the fight. He mentioned after his last fight that he was in no hurry to fight for the title, but that is different than saying no to a title shot. I'd be pretty surprised if he actually turned the fight down.

Dana recently said that Hioki told the ufc that he wanted one more fight before getting a shot.

He did tell them that months ago, but that is not the same as turning down the fight. Considering the bind the UFC was in, Hioki would have been the right call regardless.

Aaaaaaand they won't be getting Aldo either now.

Aldo vs. TBA/Koch is getting moved back to UFC 149, which I believe was the original plan anyway.

This is now essentially the TUF Brazil finale masquerading as a numbered UFC event.

The thread title should be changed yet again, Dana confirmed the headliner for this is Wand/Belfort.

The following fights have been confirmed by UFC.com, but not yet added to the Official Fight Card"
Middleweight bout: Brazil Vitor Belfort vs. Brazil Wanderlei Silva
Heavyweight bout: Brazil Fabricio Werdum vs. United States Mike Russow
The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil Middleweight Tournament Finale
The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil Featherweight Tournament Finale
Milton Vieira vs. Felipe Arantes
Yuri Alcantara vs. Hacran Dias

This is a ppv, anyone planning on shelling out 55 bucks for this bad boy? yikes.
