Nuggets have solid big men and Faried is cheaper and probably better than Amir already...

Asked about his contract status, said it hasn't changed and he's not worried about. Rambled about J-Val.

Q: Do you feel you have the offensive fulcrums in place to make a very efficient offence work or do you need more talent?

"I think the thing we really need to improve is our shooting. As a whole, we need to improve our shooting. It might come in the form of draft. It might come in free agency. There's very effective shooters out there that could potentially come in and help us, whether it's a rotation player that's in all the time or a role-player who comes in in spot situations. You look at a guy like, I can't say names, but there are players that would fit that bill and I think also, you talk about that internal growth. Our guys are athletes, they're basketball players. You're going to see continued steps taken forward on a positive note with them as well. But shooting is key.

The other thing I think we need more than anything, we need to get in the mindset of pushing the ball up the floor, getting some easy looks, probing, taking what the defence gives you, and a lot of times teams are lazy and give you transition baskets. Our fast-break points should go up. Our mindset is when you have young athletes, which we do, get the ball down the floor, see what you got. No point in walking it up for a 14-second count. I'd rather always take a look and see what's there.

Having said that, we focused so much on defence this year early that itwas difficult to do both at once with a 10-day training camp. I'm not knocking the coaching staff at all. They set out to do something important and they accomplished it. But I do believe the contending teams pick their spots and are good at running when they need to run and good at slowing down the ball when need be. As you know, games always slow down in the playoffs and that's where we want to find ourselves in the future so we want to be able to do both. There's a happy medium to find and it's not one or all the other, but with dramatically improved defence, we've again got a good foundation to make other steps forward."

BC is pretty much going to package the pick with a young player, either Ed or Demar, and see what he can get, because the pick alone isn't going to net this team much.

Jumbled question about growth/using money/trying to make the playoffs.

- "You can do both. Our staff showed tremendous diligence with JJ, ED, before games. We've got two workout coaches, Eric Hughes and John Townsend that are in effect the hardest-working guys in the league as far as I'm concerned. THey're there all the time. And if they're not there working on the basketball court, we've got Alex McKechnie or Johnny Lee in the weight room with someone working on the physical aspect of improving in the basketball game. So it's tremendous to have that kind of commitment, that kind of staff. We're going to continue to drive those points home. That doesn't necessarily have to happen in games all the time.

This year, we talked early on: how are we going to improve with so little practice time? And I made the statement, and got scoffed at, but each and every game will be a practice this year. Every 48 minutes has to be utilized as an opportunity to improve these players. It's not just about getting the W. We've got to improve these players if we want to get where we want to go. And we want to go to the playoffs.

Next year, game situations will be treated differently. Sometimes I had to hold the staff back because they were doing their job with such precision that -- they want to win. I think you get the right mindset, the right growth, the right talent, it happens. You win. And that's where we're headed. So we'll do our best to blend those ideas next year, but there'll be a little less tolerance for mistakes."

Consolidating talent is always a good move IMO.

Jerryd Bayless' role next year?

- Young players sometimes develop at different speeds. When I first talked to him, I said compare yourself to someone in the league. I think the best name he could come up with, and it took him a while, was Chauncey Billups. That's a great comparison. It took several teams and several years for him to figure out who he was. But Jerryd's committed to improving. He works his tail off. He's professional. He's a good young talent. Do I need to right now say he's a 1, a 2, a scorer off the bench? I don't think it's appropriate to do. IT's not the end of the world for Jerryd not to know his position at 23 years old. It doesn't happen at the same time for everybody. Sometimes its' based on opportunity. I think the thing is, when he plays freely and doesn't overthink, he's a pretty good player. When he thinks too much, it stagnates him to some degree. It stagnates our offence to some degree.

But he's a talent, an athlete, he can defend the ball, he can score the ball, and we'll see. He's got free agent status. He's restricted. Not sure how that's going to play out. No pre-determinations here what we'll look like post-July 1, but I'll say as a young prospect he's certainly someone we have an interest in keeping."

Does his cap hold complicate things?

- "A little bit. We'll have to decide what to do with it. Or do you do something before where you go above the cap and his cap hold is treated differently? It could come into play. It could come into play in a sign and trade. Maybe someone wants him dearly and we can talk about a more complex transaction. But right now to say we're going to do anything like that, it's too early. And I appreciate the fact that a young player says I want to be here in Toronto. I love the city, the opportunity you've given me, I love the staff -- that makes some sense to us. People want to talk about Toronto as a tough place to attract free agents, I'm still not buying it. I say that there's sunny warm climates with well-run organizations that are having similar problems right now."
