Bears draft thread: Day 3

Chewie has passed the draft thread baton after the Bears made a weird pick in round 3.
I think Emery put some heat on himself through the first 2 days by making some interesting picks that are all somewhat controversial. In round 1, a defensive pick was made that suprised lots of people who had their eyes on better known and conceivably better fitting alternatives given the Bears system. The pick of the safety in round 3 was both a reach and a luxury pick. But in round 2, the Bears took arguably the best receiver talent left on the board that has 1st round ability. Unfortunately there are questions about the pick's devotion to being in shape. At least each player seems to have reasonable upside that could easily become reality.

Picks in rounds 4, 6, and 7 coming up today with needs to be filled at DT, TE, CB, and OL. I almost don't want the Bears to go looking for an OT. Tough to find them at this point in the draft and the pick could be wasted. Better do it in round 4 if at all.

This part of the draft is where Jerry Angelo was great. I am hopeful that Emery unearths some gems for our team today. I am also hopeful that our 1st-3rd round picks make an impact this season. I also agree with the OP that an OT should be drafted in the 4th round, but because of our youth at the O-line bookends, I wouldn't be too disappointed in a DT being drafted in the 4th.

Best players available at those positions

OL - Zebrie Sanders : Florida State, has good technique and feet, reliable in pass-protection and can get out to block on screens, could improve his strength and pass blocking, 6-5 320.
or Bobby Massie: Ole Miss, good run-blocker and lower-body strength, needs to improve upper-body strength and pass-blocking technique, slow-footed, 6-6 316. (I prefer Sanders)

DT - Billy Winn: played alongside McClellin, known for lower-body strength and use of hands, high-motor, could improve upper-body strength, good pass-rushing DT, 6-4 295.

CB - Alfonzo Dennard: Nebraska, good coverage ability and jams receivers at the line, great hops with the ability to knock the ball away, good in run support, not the fastest guy but has smooth hips, 5-10 205. (Got in a fight with Alshon Jeffrey in the bowl game and was recently accused of punching a police officer after getting in a bar fight.)

TE - Orson Charles: Georgia, great strength with the very good blocking ability and shield the ball from defenders in underneath zone routes, reliable hands, not a great route-runner, 6-2 250. (Green and Hanna would be the way to go if you're looking for a more dynamic receiving tight end.)

I like Winn and Sanders the most out of these guys. Winn is a good pass-rusher inside and would just add to the nice rotation we have there. Sanders is known for being a reliable pass-blocker and has good technique. Basically the opposite of Webb and Bobby Massie who are known for their size and athleticism but lack proper technique.

CBS - Green

If Bears don't take one of these in round 4, they'll almost certainly won't be there in round 6.

Remember, Emery said it was a good draft to project OTs to interior line. Even if we draft a OT it may be to use as a OG. And you know Tice wan'ts big guys across the line anyways.

Won't be shocked if we skip it all together though.

NFL.com says he's a TE. At 6'1", I'm guessing this is the FB for Mike Tice's running game.

FB/h-back seems an odd pick...but I guess it makes some sense as his strength is receiving.

Pro Football Weekly (#15 TE) :

Positives:

Very athletic. Flexible hips and fluid movement skills. Very good balance and body control. Catches easily and has a wide catching radius. Effective move blocker — fits on linebackers and is able to adjust to moving targets.
Negatives:

Not tough or physical — could stand to get stronger and become more of a finisher. Gets outmuscled in line. Too reliant on athletic ability — not a savvy route runner. Limited elusiveness and tackle-breaking ability. Is immature and does not know what it means to be a pro. Character and dependability need to be investigated.
Summary:

Athletic, finesse, high-maintenance “move” player with tweener traits and off-the-field red flags. Would benefit from the presence of a demanding father-figure presence in a city far from the East Coast, where trouble has followed him.

Are the Bears thinking of using him at TE?

Strengths: Good athlete with smooth body control and coordination. Has the short-area quickness to make moves in the open field. Displays good vision and feel as a receiver, tracking the ball well and showing very good field awareness. Possesses soft hands and good focus. A natural pass catcher who won't fight the ball. Physical at the point of attack and gives very good effort as a blocker, always looking for someone to hit. Tough and takes on contact well. Versatile with experience lining up as a lead-blocking fullback and on the line of scrimmage as a tight end. Can be used all over the field and also played on special teams coverage.

Weaknesses: Undersized and lacks ideal measureables, showing tweener traits. ...

I will say one thing for Emery...he is willing to take risks. Every pick has relatively big questions associated with each player.
