Aside from Rudy Gay, who are some players that underachieved in college that blew up in the NBA?

What's funny is that I had lunch with Terrence Ross' agent yesterday. We talked about every possible scenario. Toronto never came up.

Even Rudy Gay, as a second year NCAA player, had a well-defined position and clear role on his team. The risk with Jones is that it will take teams 3-4 years just to figure out whether he is a 3 or 4.

Re: Raptors NBA Draft Thread: Perry Jones
"Of the 90 NCAA prospects currently classified as power forwards in our database, Jones ranks 78th in defensive rebounding on a per-minute basis, which is extremely disappointing considering his physical tools and the fact that none of his teammates are particularly prolific in this category. He shows fairly poor awareness here, often failing to box out opponents and doesn't look very instinctive or energetic in the way he pursues loose balls.
These attributes definitely translate to the rest of his defensive game, where Jones clearly lacks toughness and activity. He regularly gets lost off the ball, being a step slow to react to things happening on the floor and not putting enough work in early in possessions to stop opponents from getting the ball in a favorable position. Physical players move him around the paint fairly easily and Jones doesn't always respond the way you'd hope. He often allows himself to get outhustled and outworked.
Beyond his poor fundamentals, Jones doesn't seem to be the most contact-loving player in the world. He tends to shy away from putting a body on opponents and isn't one to dive on the floor for loose balls. With his size, length, quickness and ability to get in a low stance, Jones has all the tools to be an excellent defender and rebounder down the road.

This is a concern.
The question is whether its his motor or whether he can be "coached up".
What I will say is that while Perry Jones may not be the best fit for the Raptors, the Raptors may be the best fit for Perry Jones because of how much his defensive game should progress under Casey.

Rajon Rondo
True...but a different situation. The issue with Rondo was simply that he could not sink a jumper to save his life. The concerns about Gay coming into the league - which are the same as those for Jones - are more intangible.

I think PJ is a decent grab at 8. I see him as a Rashard, Bender, Blatche, Odom potential player. Like Iliard he's more of a high risk high reward type player. But I think he's going to be more of a fit in the NBA and fit for our roster. I'd prefer Marshall but I have a feeling if Utah has GSW pick ahead of us they'll be grabbing him ahead of us.

Re: Raptors NBA Draft Thread: Perry Jones
From watching that video on his ball handling, it seems pretty evident that he is a 4 even if in his mind he thinks he's a 3. His handles are not tight enough to be a 3 at all. I'd stay away from PJ3 if possible.

If Lamb/Barnes/Beal/MKG is available I would also say pick them, but if they're gone we must pick PJ3

Re: Raptors NBA Draft Thread: Perry Jones
As unlikely as it may be....the kid either becomes a top SF or nothing at all in the league.
I've hated this kid as our pick all year but sadly this is now our best option; go for the homerun or strike out...our team has enough roleplayers as it is. If we had Triano there would be no way I even waste the time or bench space because his consistency just wouldn't happen but I believe in Casey.
Listen to the interview, he considers himself a SF in a PF's body and models his game after Durant...that makes all the difference in how he actually plays the game vs where some people would like to put him. He's simply not physical enough to play PF and he has plenty of finesse and polish to play SF. It's like people don't want to accept that he actually does have a shooting touch from both the midrange and THREE point line. Everyone keeps saying he's not quick enough to guard SF but yet the FACT is he was the FASTEST player on Baylor even against his PGs -- not to mention his length will ALSO (not alone as again he's quick enough) help compensate.

i'd stay away from a raw tweener with no defined position that plays like anthony randolph (maybe even worse).
heck kendall marshall would be a better prospect than this guy.

We don't need Calderon's stunt double.

Re: Raptors NBA Draft Thread: Perry Jones
I still don't like Perry Jones, his assertiveness, defense and rebounding leave much to be desired from a guy with his physical tools. I put him in the same category as Drummond as permanent potential players and nothing else.

Re: Raptors NBA Draft Thread: Perry Jones
I'm sorry, but even if Perry Jones III sees himself as a SF, it still doesn't make him one. The comparison to Kevin Durant isn't even accurate at all because Durant is so great at creating space off the dribble with his step-back and herky-jerky body fakes hitting those tough off-balance jumpers like he did last night against the Mavericks for the game winner, is very fluid playing off of the ball, and his handles is very tight for a 6-10 player. Perry Jones III has never shown any of this at Baylor, and that was with the offense running through him. He could do whatever he wanted with the ball, but not once has he shown the on-ball skills consistently. And no one ever disputed that he isn't fast. It's his LATERAL quickness that's the problem here than his vertical quickness up and down the floor. We've seen PJ3 run with the ball on the break and filled the wings. But he's shown to be pretty slow moving side-to-side.

Just a little confused here, what is vertical quickness up and down the floor? Aren't the two perpendicular directions? or do you mean like forward sprinting?

When PJ III does become a successful SF, a lot of you guys are going to be shaking your head in dismay on your so called "scouting" skills.
Too slow to guard a SF?
not strong enough to guard a PF?
hahaha I actually laugh at this, please continue to lower his stock so we can get him forsure. I'm not going to have a treadmill argument with some of you on why PJ III is the BPA at 8.
PJ III > Lillard > Marshall.

Yea, and all those REAL scouts who are saying the same things about him.
But hey, you have the word scout in your user name so obviously you are legit.
